A: pours a murky reddish brown color. nice rich khaki colored head. lower retention rate. great ringlike lacing.

S: a lot more hop aroma than I expected. big pine resin, lots of citrus, and a good variety of floral notes. grapefruit and blood oranges. lots of rich, sweet malts. some apples and light spices.

T: now that's a barleywine. I get a great malt backbone, some sweet flavors. vast array of grapefruits, blood oranges, figs, apples, possibly some dates. hints of maple syrup and honey. great use of amarillo and simcoe.

M: malt backbone is thinner than expected. I do get some mead like characteristics from the honey, with the higher ABV. relatively smooth for a barleywine. smooth carbonation level.

Poured into a beer glass.
A - Pours a somewhat murky amber color (I poured it a little fast and there was a reasonable amount of sediment). The half finger of head slowly dissipates to a fine lacing.
S - Very hoppy with some malt and carmel in the background.
T - Somewhat off pine/resinous hop flavor up front. A little bit of malt in there but mostly hops, hop and more hops.
M - Medium mouth feel with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O - An average American style barley wine. Not very well balanced. Maybe in 3 years the hops would have dropped out some but here and now not very pleasing and I like barley wines.

12oz 2013 bottle poured into a BFM globe.

A- Murky brown. No head or lacing, some slow bubbles, looks flat.

S- Honey, malt, toffee, leather, bitter hops deep within, and some vanilla. Smell is muted but nice.

T- Sweet malt juice with a slight hint of bitter hops. So good. It has all you want in the flavor. Sweet honey, vanilla, toffee, leather, tobacco and bitter soap with a crisp pine tar finish.

M- No carbonation, medium body with a viscus mouthfeel. No sign of high ABV with a good crisp finish that lingers on the palate.

O- I've had it aged and now fresh and its world class either way. What a great beer. Worth finding and aging or drinking fresh!!

on tap at the brewery, Portland

Murky leather brown with taupe rings.
Bright fresh orange hard candy nose with chocolate bark and coffee sweetness.
Leather, coffee candy, burnt sugar, date and dried apricot, then a bit does of orangey hops.
Werthers finish and brown sugar syrup linger.

Lots of complexity, if not hops. Piles of sweetness that could use more IBUs for balance - I get the Amarillo, but not the Simcoe. A great winter sipper.
