2002 Bottle: Hoo-yeah, this is a potent beer! Dark murky amber color with an insanely thick off-white head. As with other HOTD beers, this one took awhile to pour. Aroma of hops and pepper resonates throughout the glass. Definitely has some Imperial IPA qualities in the flavor, with strong hops, alcohol, and some fruit. There is enough malt in the flavor and in the finish to balance it out and to make for a nice seasonal Barley Wine.

Doggie Claws
12 oz. bottle from 2011 sent generously by Ron. Thanks! 11% ABV. Poured into a snifter.

A good combination of malts and hops, Doggie Claws smells sweet and caramel like, yet floral-fruity at the same time... much like honey? Swirling lets the nuances of hops come forward and the pungent character of American hops is felt.

Taste is only moderately sweet and bitterness is medium but lingering. Age will certainly treat this beer well as the label claims. Having been on a barleywine kick for a while now, I find myself short of adjectives but suffice it to say that it's good. Notable and somewhat distinguishing features are: a sweetness that holds its own against hops that sometimes seem to overwhelm fresh American versions; strong citrus peel; and a floral character that is probably from honey. I am no expert on braggots but I have enjoyed whatever I have had, so I am certainly digging this floral sweetness. Hints of booze are only welcome.

The body is good but carbonation seems a tad high. Regardless, swirling and warmth will take care of it. I like this beer.

Smell: malty, hint of bubblegum, dark fruit, vanilla, oak, toffee.

Taste: malty, honey, toffee, caramel, spicy, oak, vanilla.

Mouthfeel: full bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth, slightly boozy as it warms.

12 oz. bottle tried 10 Jan 2009. 2008 version.

Poured in 0.3 L becker. One inch foamy tan head. Clear dark roux color. Aroma is very resiny, earthy, sweet, piny, lots of alcohol. First sip fills the mouth with pine, transitions to sweet candied ginger and pineapple. Finishes with warm rum and cinnamon. Aftertaste is somewhat strangly melony. Medium heavy body. Although certainly warming, alcohol feels less than 11%.

This would be a regular in my fridge except for the relatively steep price tag ($5.99).

2007 vintage, freshly released this past week. Poured from the 12oz bottle into a Maudite snifter. Body is a deep garnet color with dark orange highlights, topped by a very thin, off-white head. Strong hoppy aroma is balanced by a sweet, slightly dark malt with a hint of caramel. Palate is initially sweet from the malt, with the piny hops emerging mid-palate to provide a bracing bitterness. The sweetness continues on the finish, along with a good bit of warming alcohol and a hint of nutty flavor.
Body is thick and a touch creamy, but fairly still and devoid of carbonation. The alcohol on the finish is pretty intense and leaves a sticky, hoppy residue on the tongue. This is a highly enjoyable vintage of this beer, and a definite improvement from the past couple of years. I'm looking forward to seeing what a few months of aging will do for it.

Pours a dark, ruby red with hint of burnt orange. Lots of effervescence and a one-finger light tan head.
Aroma of caramel, heavy belgian spices, dark brown sugar and a slightly burnt or roasted hint.
Flavor of caramel, brown sugar, slight charcoal, hint of peat and a deep dark citrus hit.
Mouthfeel has very belgian-like qualities, spicy coriander with heavy caramel malt front. Belgian specialization of this brewer comes through clearly.
Drinkability is going to be great but right harshness is not smoothed enough with age. wish I had another to age 6-12 month.
thanks to my bro Skyhand for another quality brew.
