12oz 2013 bottle poured into a BFM globe.

A- Murky brown. No head or lacing, some slow bubbles, looks flat.

S- Honey, malt, toffee, leather, bitter hops deep within, and some vanilla. Smell is muted but nice.

T- Sweet malt juice with a slight hint of bitter hops. So good. It has all you want in the flavor. Sweet honey, vanilla, toffee, leather, tobacco and bitter soap with a crisp pine tar finish.

M- No carbonation, medium body with a viscus mouthfeel. No sign of high ABV with a good crisp finish that lingers on the palate.

O- I've had it aged and now fresh and its world class either way. What a great beer. Worth finding and aging or drinking fresh!!

on tap at the brewery, Portland

Murky leather brown with taupe rings.
Bright fresh orange hard candy nose with chocolate bark and coffee sweetness.
Leather, coffee candy, burnt sugar, date and dried apricot, then a bit does of orangey hops.
Werthers finish and brown sugar syrup linger.

Lots of complexity, if not hops. Piles of sweetness that could use more IBUs for balance - I get the Amarillo, but not the Simcoe. A great winter sipper.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage bottling. Big crack upon opening, very highly carbonated. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy ruby red color with a 2-3 finger foamy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, pepper, floral, grass, caramel, toast, brown sugar, raisin, honey, herbal, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, citrus rind, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, honey, floral, grass, pine, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange zest/rind, pine, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, honey, floral, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops with dark malt/honey flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barleywine. All around great balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

A: Opaque copper colored brew with a creamy tan head. Excellent lacing and head retention. Yeast sediment is present.
S: Aromas of bread, toffee & brown sugar. Alcohol and yeasty notes dance on the nose.
T: Biscuity malt flavors with honey presence. Opens as it warms and becomes more intensely boozy.
M: Chewy and warming.
O: Full flavored & boozy.

12oz bottle of the 2011 vintage, so 2 years old at this point. Thanks Doug for bringing this one over. Poured into a Toppling Goliath snifter today, 2/5/2014.

App- Very hazy, cloudy medium-dark brown body. Looks like muddy water, kind of disgusting actually. Minimal head, minimal retention, no lacing.

Smell- Dark fruits, molasses, sugar, tart fruits- perhaps freshly cut apple or pear- caramel, toffee. Hints of earthiness.

Flavour- I assume this has mellowed out really well. Molasses, brown sugar, caramel, toffee dominate. A little bit of what I perceive as vanilla. Slight earthy backend.

Mouthfeel- Thick bodied, somewhat creamy, good carbonation despite being 2 years old. Interestingly, the backend is sweeter than it is early.

Overall- Nice drinking barleywine. I'm going to have to get a bottle to try fresh, but I can already say that 2 years of age definitely has to have helped this beer; at the very least it didn't hurt it.
