2004 vintage in September 2005. I thought this beer would pour still so I gave it a good high pour and ended up having to gulp a big mouth of foam to keep it from spilling on my lap. I knew this was going to be good because even the foam was tasty – nice malty sweetness with hints of chocolate and great multiple hop flavors. It was a deep brown color and smelled like a west coast barley wine should – hoppy as hell. The taste reminds me so well why I love the style. Rich, sweet malty and hoppy all in a big rich high alcohol package. The taste lingers on and on, totally coating your palate making sure nothing can compete with this hop monster. Ledger’s in Berkeley.

Appearence: Desipte what the bottle says, it pours a dark ruby with floating yeast chunks with a giant beige head.

Smell: The smell is incredibly hoppy and complex with a spicy alcohol back to it.

Taste and Mouthfeel: The taste is also incredibly hoppy. The hops are floral, earthy citrusy and so much more. Odd focus for a Barleywine, but it works really well. The malts are present but not incredibly obvious, and the alcohol is very powerful. The mouthfeel is thinner than I'd hoped.

Drinkability and Overall: This is a wonderfully unique barleywine. The hops are crazy but they work. In a few years this one will be an absolute gem. But still, it's a breath of fresh air even when young.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Hair of the Dog tulip. 2011 vintage, so 2yrs old at this point. Bought for $5.49 at Total Wine in Tustin CA.

A - Very cloudy (dirty) brown and not a pleasant shade;-) Off white head leaves excellent lacing.

S - Brown sugar, dates, cat piss (in a good way).

T - Again leads in w/ sweet brown sugar, dates and finishes in a slightly black pepper, spicy note w/ a dose of catpiss hops (after 2yrs!!). Everything is very smooth, no alcohol burn. All flavors meld nicely. Nothing overwhelms.

M - Full body and very creamy. Carbonation is soft and is perfect for the body and style.

O - Great beer! The age has really mellowed it in a great way. Would even let this age a few more years as it doesn't seem to have degraded and might get even better.
