22oz bottle of the spring, 2012, batch purchased at Enoteca in Post Falls, Idaho, for $7.99. This is one of my “white whales.” First time I’ve laid eyes on this beer, as it’s never made it to Spokane before.
Pours a bronze/amber color, without too much of a head, but what there was endured, and left a surprising amount of lace on my glass. Strangely, the upper portion of the beer was darker than the lower portion.
Very big citrusy hop scent right off the bat. As it warms up, there’s a tiny whiff of what might be a slightly sweet, caramel-like malt aroma, but it’s almost totally overwhelmed by the hops.
A big, grapefruity hop blast is what is first tasted when drinking this beer. There’s also some subordinate hop flavor that is more of a piney, bitter tendancy, but the fruit flavor is the ruler of this beer. Malts are there, but they’re hiding under a table while weeping piteously.
Medium bodied, with a rich, sticky, resiny, oily mouthfeel.
This is a BIG IPA, and would probably be wasted on the neophyte beer drinker. It’s very tasty, but I find myself wishing there was a little more balance. I know this batch has been criticized by some on BA as being a little bit inferior to earlier versions, and can’t help but wonder if I would be more satisfied by those earlier batches. Still, even a slightly disappointing (if that’s even the right word to use here) batch of this beer is pretty tasty and worth seeking out. Hopefully, I’ll see future batches here and will be able to compare them.

Light malt, heavy citrus hops. Similar to Julius but not as citrusy. Bitterness lingers, perhaps too much. More pine than I would like. Overall solid beer. Would drink again, great summer beer. ..............................................................

22 oz bottle "Spring 2004" into pint glass.
Appearance 3.00 - Golden orange with a muddy green tint. Quite hazy. Present but not particularly voluminous head is egg shell white, fine, firm, and staying. Very fine-grain bubbles with moderate lacing. Looks a little murky honestly.
Smell 4.00 - Tropical aroma is immediate and forceful. Mainly rich ripe pineapple with some strawberry and papaya backing it up, and lingering dried apricot. Little to no yeast aromas, though an underlying subtle layer of grassy pale malt is detectable.
Taste 3.00 - Like the appearance, it's a little murky. The malt is grassy and hay-like and the hop bitterness is flat and persistent, its constant presence muting the ripe tropical fruit flavors which are present, and follow the nose, but fail to truly stand up. The pineapple and papaya is largely lost in the enduring bitterness, itself influenced by the damp straw of the malt. The main fruit character is lackluster white grapefruit.
Mouthfeel 3.75 - Very pleasant texture is smooth and creamy, with a really excellent effervescence. The hop acids dry the tongue and cheeks, clawing a bit at the enamel of the teeth. Proper for its style. Full round weight in the mouth, like whole milk, follows the hazy appearance.
Overall 3.25 - An enjoyable example of the style, but off the mark. The killer aroma promises a tropical banquet that never shows up to the party. Texture is pretty spot on and the appearance is fine, but overall the taste is a plain grapefruit bitterness and grassy malt notes - enjoyable but average.
