look: 3 | smell: 4 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.25

22 oz bottle "Spring 2004" into pint glass.

Appearance 3.00 - Golden orange with a muddy green tint. Quite hazy. Present but not particularly voluminous head is egg shell white, fine, firm, and staying. Very fine-grain bubbles with moderate lacing. Looks a little murky honestly.

Smell 4.00 - Tropical aroma is immediate and forceful. Mainly rich ripe pineapple with some strawberry and papaya backing it up, and lingering dried apricot. Little to no yeast aromas, though an underlying subtle layer of grassy pale malt is detectable.

Taste 3.00 - Like the appearance, it's a little murky. The malt is grassy and hay-like and the hop bitterness is flat and persistent, its constant presence muting the ripe tropical fruit flavors which are present, and follow the nose, but fail to truly stand up. The pineapple and papaya is largely lost in the enduring bitterness, itself influenced by the damp straw of the malt. The main fruit character is lackluster white grapefruit.

Mouthfeel 3.75 - Very pleasant texture is smooth and creamy, with a really excellent effervescence. The hop acids dry the tongue and cheeks, clawing a bit at the enamel of the teeth. Proper for its style. Full round weight in the mouth, like whole milk, follows the hazy appearance.

Overall 3.25 - An enjoyable example of the style, but off the mark. The killer aroma promises a tropical banquet that never shows up to the party. Texture is pretty spot on and the appearance is fine, but overall the taste is a plain grapefruit bitterness and grassy malt notes - enjoyable but average.

Pours a hazy, cloudy, murky looking dark amber with virtually no head and no lacing. The aroma has oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, and light pineapple.

Oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, and some light pineapple are also present in the flavor. This is a sweet beer, with some bitterness. Good flavor, but not great.

While the flavor is good, the carbonation is not. It is too low, to the point where the bottle is almost flat. The body is medium / full, and the overall mouthfeel is the main weakness of this beer. Overall this beer would be a lot better, if the carbonation problems were fixed. Very disappointing, especially when I consider how good Hair of the Dog beers usually are.

Served on tap at Capone's then at The Drafting Room and then at Capone's again for good measure. Short bar review.

Blue Dot is a beer that you think would be brighter than what it is. Expecting a DIPA looking beer, this comes off more like a dark lager. A dark orange with some light brown interwoven, the rye makes it's presense known in the appearence. Nothing more than a off white cap of foam around the glass. The smell is interesting but I would not think this was from Oregon if I did not know. Dark rye with biscuits and bread with some citrus sounds about right. This smells downright east coast. Taste is interesting but is this a DIPA, or did these kegs not travel well to the east coast? I get some citrus with grapefruit and orange but not alot. The rye is spicy and what I get the most out of this beer, a nice punch of spice. A little bit of caramel from a nice malting. The feel is medium and a bit slick going down, but for some reason not much bitterness and hardly a hop bite, carb is on point though. I had this beer a few times and I was let down by it. I think im really supposed to like this beer because HOTD aint to shabby and it's a DIPA from the west, but for now Im thinking this may be a off batch. Imma need to track down a bottle.

Well, surprisingly, a straw yellow pour greets me. Nuttin wrong about the substantial pillow top of white / ivory head on top though.

Notes of hops and malt in the aroma, although nothing ground breaking. Taste was different from expected – a sharp and very dry kick of a piney hops. I was surprised that a beer that clamed to be a DIPA is only 7%. , a little wimpy, in my book. Yep, tasty, but I say this is a regular IPA only.

BUT! Very nice of squidswilbsquids

Fall 2009 bottle into pint glass.

A: Golden honey colored. Bubbles rising to the top. Only a slim layer of foam for head that resides to a ring of foam around the glass. Spotty lacing left behind.

S: Malt forward with lots of sweet pale honey smelling malts. A bit of pine, citrus, dank, resin in the nose as well. A bit much of a malt bomb in the nose for me.

T: Sweet honey from the pilsner malts with a hint of spice from the rye. Hops come through as dank, and bitter resin mostly. Some citrus hop flavor as well (lemon/orange).

M: Pretty full bodied and oily. Not really well carbonated, but the carbonation is fairly prickly which in combination with the rye and hop character make this beer fairly spicy.

D: This is on of those DIPAs that seems to wish it were a barleywine. Really not what I look for in the style.

bottled spring 09. poured a muddled, hazy amber with a decent creamy head and lacing. mostly butterscotch and toffee in the aroma and taste. i was not getting much hops out of this despite it being a relatively fresh bottle. maybe some resiny pine in the background, but the butterscotch dominated. nicely balanced between the sweet malts and hop bitterness but not bitter enough for me to think this was a dipa though. pretty smooth. medium bodied with a nice frothy carbonation. just kinda 'meh'.

Note: It is August 2008. The bottle I drank was from the spring 2007 batch. I feel as if i am reviewing a completely different beer.

Purchased at City Beer. Pulled from the fridge, but who knows where it was stored for the last year. It was poured into a tulip glass because of warnings of massive head action. The first pour yielded a light golden color with a crisp white head. There was a brief hop aroma, but it went away within 30 seconds of opening the bottle.

Each pour would bring massive amounts of head, I may have lost and eighth of the beer to foam.

This beer, aged, winds up tasting like a Saison or a tame wild ale. The Double IPA characteristics were absent. I feel like I can't say much more. I'm not quite sure why this beer was aged. Maybe because it couldn't sell enough in the first place.

Drink this beer fresh and new.

Summer 2013 batch, poured into a tulip glass.

Aroma - Strong citrus and piney smells, a hint of tropical fruit/pineapple.

Appearance - Very cloudy, low clarity (almost opaque) and much darker orangey-brown than I remember it being. Head is white and short-lived.

Flavor - Immediate citrus-rind bitterness followed by a light caramel malt flavor. Finishes with grapefruit and pine notes. More than a hint of astringency.

Mouthfeel - A bit fuzzy/chunky, actually. The carbonation is nice, but the gritty texture is kind of off-putting.

Overall Impression - I usually love Blue Dot a lot more than this. The mouthfeel made it less refreshing than usual, and the astringency was only slightly unpleasant. The hop profile is great, the citrus/grapefruit/pine thing really lingers on the palate.

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a dirty beige color ale with a large foamy head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma of dry and citrus hops with dry malt. Taste is drier then expected with some citrus notes. Malt profile is definitely different then most IIPA which might be due to the usage of rye. Good carbonation with full body which seems to indicated limited filtration and no apparent alcohol. While I appreciated this beer and like how it is trying to do something different (rye) for a style too often populated by clones, I thought it was a bit too dry and lacking some floral notes.

Curious lack of a head at all, even with a vigorous pour, wispy white bubbles here and there, close to zero lacing too. Super-murky, like it was muddy and then ran through a sieve, a mix of red to orange clay in the deeply translucent core, no change in hue at the rims, just lighter. Wet, concentrated nose of fresh hops, earthy funk, tar, black tea leaves, a carton of sour pink grapefruit juice, dried pine sap, the hops pungent but without a keen edge, the malts bring caramel, cocoa powder, butterscotch, blends in some pumpernickel bread and mixed grains, peppery as well. Full-bodied and heavy, like a bowling ball crashing through a window. Tangy but sweet on the whole, the pulpy juice of the pink to white grapefruit and orange juice impossible to deny, Caramel, toffee and warmed milk chocolate come next, albeit briefly as the pine tar and lemongrass, pepper, peat moss and rye to pumpernickel bread come through. Oddly, never gets really herbaceousness in a puckering way. The apricot, nectarine, pineapple, guava fruit less of a presence than might be expected. Stays fat and wide in the mouth through a prolonged finish. If you like 'em big...

Summer 2013. Pours a hazy brown with minimal head and no lacing to speak of. Looks like unfiltered apple cider. I wonder if it's past it's prime. Earthy, malty aroma gives way to subdued citrus and pine resin. Not the hop bomb one would expect. Bitterness does hit the tongue first, it gives way to a biscuity malt. It has a medium body with very little carbonation. Overall, I'm not entirely sure I'm reviewing this beer at its freshest, I've seen some photos and read some descriptions indicating a bright amber color with vibrant carbonation. I'll give it another shot when the Fall 2013 version comes out.

A: pours a hazy orange with a finger of white head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: lots of sweet caramel, orange, and grapefruit. Some sour rye notes as well.

T: sweet caramel and grapefruit at first with rye characters that follow. There are some piny bitter notes on the finish.

M: medium body wih low carbonation, this beer could use a lighter body or higher carbonation.

O: a pretty decent IPA, though almost like a barleywine with its caramel sweetness.

Odd looking IPA. Resembles an unflitered wheat/hefe. Rich and creamy off white head with thin sticky lace good overall retention.

Wonderful fruity nose. Grapefruit, floral hop, lemon zest, orange and apple. Some pineyness lies in the background as well as sweet malt hints.

This IPA is unbalanced. The bitterness on the finish has rough edges and the mouthfeel is thin and coating. The raw hop flavor just doesn't mesh well with the malt. I'm not sure if this may be slightly old. Acquired in a trade. The fruit of the nose is no where to be found in the taste. Their is slight grapefruit and pine. Otherwise it's all thick cloying malt, that is made thin by the raw bitter hops.
