On-tap at the brewery's tasting room in Portland, OR.
Pours a deep, burnished red colour, with a solid haze and a full, slightly spiritous body. Head is off-white forming a bubbly and fine crown. Some translucent sheeting lace forms when tilted, leaving a gooey and fine residue. Good looking beer.
Nose is malty to its core. Slight sharpness comes through, however, leaving pithy hops, along with a slightly weedy vegetative character.
Light crisp malt on the front palate, with a touch of pepper, before some sharp boozy notes come in half-way through. It loses all hint of sweetness about here on the palate, leaving head and pepper to bring in the rear, along with a touch of vegetation.
Feel is smooth, with the booziness providing a smooth, warming, insidious glow to the palate. It's boozy, no doubt about it. Prickly, even.
You can feel this beer. It's big and bold. But it's not aggressive and arrogant for all of that. It has a conception to it that brings you in. Good stuff.

On tap at the tasting room.
The beer pours a copper amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is atractive in this beer, as I get plenty of sweet malt, but toffee and some noticeable smoke that is attractive. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but thankfully there's enough underlying hoppy bitterness to keep this from tasting too sweet (though the beer is on the sweet side). Mouthfeel is medum bodied, with a fairly long finish. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile... I was surprised to read that it's 8%.
Like the Lila lager, this is a nice enough beer, but it tends to pale in comparison to what else is on offer at the tasting room.

On tap at the tasting room on 8.2.12.
A - Served a dark red-brown with a foamy light tan head that lingers around.
S - Sweet malts, with a subtle hop finish.
T - Again sweet malts, tiny bit of hops and a smooth smoke. I will say it is a different smoke than most smoke beer, I guess more natural than most.
D - Tons of carbonation, medium body. Sweeetttt.
O - Fit for the style. Sweet and malty with a hint of smokey hops.

On tap at the brewery yesterday.
Dark brown with reddish brown highlights, this beer is capped with an off-white head. The nose is complex. Toasty, leathery, caramel malt character is pronounced, with a wonderful tobacco aroma. Burnt sugar and toffee round out the excellent nose. The palate opens medium-full in body, with a big burnt sugar/toffee backbone with some smoke, leather and tobacco. Brown sugar, buckwheat honey are present on the mid-palate. Burnt sugar lingers on the finish. Hops appear towards the finish, leafy, earthy and mildly bitter. Low in carbonation, this beer is medium-full in body with alcohol well-integrated in the palate. Excellent stuff.

on-tap at Hair of the Dog.
Medium-dark brown with very light tan head.
Smokey malts, light caramel. Lightly bitter hops.
Taste follows the nose, with very lightly, smokey leathery malts, blended with caramel and floral bitter hops.
Medium body, with average carbonation.
Very enjoyable beer, another new one from Hair of the Dog that I would like to see brewed with some regularity.

NOTE: at the abv listed here, not to mention the flavor, Will should fall into the Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy category, no argument
A: deep vinous crimson red, beautiful ruby-jewel glow.... some aged-brown highlights on the edges.... head quickly disappeared - to be expected....
S: subtle medium crystal malts with a tiny touch of (as if the glass was lightly rinsed) hickory-smoked caramelized meat fat (probably exaggerating that a bit, but the element is peeking out, the hint spawned growth to the idea)
T: they nailed the taste, reminds me right away of Skull Splitter, just more smoky notes, but not all that much.... the dense sanguine malt, mild dextrin kiss.... surprisingly clean and refined
M: has a hint of the requisite fuller body up front, yet it's not quite full-bodied.... bit of a delicate flow, like it was aged in an oak barrel... a lil more chewiness might be nice, but it's quite fine, clean, and quaffable the way it is.... wine-like
O: may just fight for #1 in my list of best American versions of a Scotch Ale... the fact that HOTD had such a beer in their lineup was a surprise and delight
