07/31/06- Purchased at Sonoma Wine Exchange in Sonoma, CA.
Presentation- 12oz bottle, batch number 65. Other than that, not sure when it was brewed or bottled. Poured into my Duvel tulip.
Appearance- Deeper brown in color with some red transluscent highlights. Maybe even a dark cherry color. Nice 3/4 inch head with streaks, small chunks and patches of lace left behind. Still was sticking to my glass when I woke up this morning.
Smell- Heavy hitter with loads of dark fruits and deep caramel malt scents. Figs for sure, possibly dates and plums, a bit of raisin as well.
Taste- Sweet, but not over the top. Malt is caramel and is dark almost to the point of being roasted or a bit charcoal. Fruits blend together very nicely. Tons of fig with raisins and maybe some dark cherry notes. A mild oaky or some kind of woody taste makes itself known as well. Lots of nice flavors here.
Mouthfeel- The only grudge I have about this beer is it's carbonation level. Well higher than I enjoy for a beer of this style. I'm sure it would mellow with age, but this was pretty fizzy...almost cola like. I'd like to try this from tap if it exists.
Drinkability- Other than the carb, it's got great flavors, a great nose and looks good too. All together a very good beer which may just need to mellow out before becoming outstanding.

Poured into a teku, dark brown and murky, with no head. Smell up front is smoke, a dark fruits, raisins, figs a hint of cherry skin. Getting a lot of smoke in the taste. It's a subdued smoke, not like a rauch or anything, but it's definitely there. Was not expecting it and it overshadows some of the other flavors. No carb issue here. As it warms, some of the dark fruit, caramel, burnt sugar flavor is coming out. Super complex. This might have gone over my head. Worth a try for sure. I'll try some with some age on it, see how that compares.
