Adam is a contemporary interpretation of an historic altbier from Dortmund, Germany though it bears little resemblance to most present-day alts. It is thick, murky and tremendously complex a heavyweight champion in the world of modern beer styles.
This was the first beer commercially produced by HOTD founder Alan Sprints. And while the name of this beer has its historic origins in northern Germany, one cant help but feel the almost biblical impulse behind naming your first creation Adam. I picture the bearded and bespectacled Sprints immortalized on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, his right hand extended, his index finger touching a bottle of this dazzling creation. A heavenly choir resounds with his glory while Satan, burning with fury, cracks open another Coors Light in the bowels of the inferno.
I suppose thats a lot to ask from a beer, though if any beer were capable of owning up to such inspired artistry, this fruit of the modern brewing renaissance would be it.
Adam begins with striking rauchbier properties a virtual smokehouse in a glass though the aroma suggests plum, cherry, and lighter barleywines. There is also a strong measure of alcohol and honeyed hazelnut to the smell. The smokiness returns in the finish after a show of fruitier malts on the main stage accompanied by notes of port wine, molasses, and coffee. A beer of such potency and complexity begs to be cellared for an extended stay some say up to ten years for Adam. But who can wait that long? Batch 61 was still immature in February 2005, but you can sense that in the future this beer will only grow more triumphant with its sharper angles rounded off and polished.
The brewer suggests Adam as a dessert beer served with chocolate or cigars. I heartily concur.
