From batch 54, bottled 06/12/02, consumed 02/13/07. Thusly very aged.
Handsome and dark, maroon, maybe. Huge, huge, huge head, probably a result of aging.
Musty and pungent.
Earthy, slightly tart, but still pretty smooth. A bit oxidized, but still in good shape despite it's four year age. Lingering fruit roiling up from underneath a basically earthy body, vineous. I can't imagin how hoppy this beer was, because there is still a hop presence after four years.
A little ragged after it's long dark wait in my closet, but an interesting experiment in aging. Time to find a fresh one while the aged sample is still fresh in my mind.

on tap at the brewery, Portland
Oily chocolate-black with beige ring.
Blackberry, black tea, and a bit of ash on the nose.
Black bread, black currant and plum jam, big brown sugar/candy middle, a bit of wood and some sherry.
Musty barrel finish and hot whiskey linger.
Medium to full, round, chewy, a bit of heat.
Lots of depth, though some oxidation notes, too. Plenty of sweetness, though not so much on the leather notes. I don’t know enough about dark Dortmunders to say if this comes close, but it’s a solid dark ale with some Belgian characteristics.
