12oz bottle, 2011 vintage. What a phenomenal beer. Dark, nearly black bodied; a small, quickly settling head; exceptionally creamy looking lace clinging to the glass in sheets. Rich chocolate aroma bursts from the glass; fruit, smoke, caramel, booze, wine-like tannins, and more.
In the flavor, lots of chocolate; big and hefty roast and caramel malt; some bitter hops remaining mostly in the background playing a supporting role; modest toffee sweetness that ends in a nearly dry finish. Pleasantly warming booze that isn’t excessively hot. Opens slowly to reveal additional layers of smokiness, tobacco, dark fruits, tannins, yeasty esters; leather, perhaps. Wow, there’s a lot in here.
Medium-full bodied with medium carbonation; alive but also smooth and creamy. Totally complex beer with myriad layers, quite a standout in a long weekend in which a lot of rare beers were ticked.

on tap at the brewery, Portland
Oily chocolate-black with beige ring.
Blackberry, black tea, and a bit of ash on the nose.
Black bread, black currant and plum jam, big brown sugar/candy middle, a bit of wood and some sherry.
Musty barrel finish and hot whiskey linger.
Medium to full, round, chewy, a bit of heat.
Lots of depth, though some oxidation notes, too. Plenty of sweetness, though not so much on the leather notes. I don’t know enough about dark Dortmunders to say if this comes close, but it’s a solid dark ale with some Belgian characteristics.
