Adam is a truly unique beer. Interestingly enough, the worst review on the site does accurately reflect some of the flavor aspects of this beer: chocolate, tobacco, slight tartness. However, these are done in subtle and tasteful proportions to the other flavors: smooth rough leather, spicy noble hops, licorice.
From the outset, this beer looks fantastic: makes me think of an organic 3 Musketeers bar in the pour, settling down to a small, yet lasting head atop an opaque, black beer with garnet highlights.
Other than flavors listed above, the aroma also hints at some sweet dried figs.
As it is a big beer, this one can wear on the palate, but is rated as highly because it is a joy to take every sip.

on tap at the brewery, Portland
Oily chocolate-black with beige ring.
Blackberry, black tea, and a bit of ash on the nose.
Black bread, black currant and plum jam, big brown sugar/candy middle, a bit of wood and some sherry.
Musty barrel finish and hot whiskey linger.
Medium to full, round, chewy, a bit of heat.
Lots of depth, though some oxidation notes, too. Plenty of sweetness, though not so much on the leather notes. I don’t know enough about dark Dortmunders to say if this comes close, but it’s a solid dark ale with some Belgian characteristics.
