A thin head on a clear, golden body.
The aroma is a good grain scent with a bit of lemon.
The taste is a sweet/bitter lemon with a long honey finish. Really nice.
The texture is crisp and clean with moderate carbonation and medium body.
Aside from not having any head, this is a great beer. The taste was an almost perfect balance of bitter and sweet.

500mL bottle, code of "L3206" on label, unclear what that means.

clear golden color, big foamy bone-white head. great head retention. mild aroma of pale malt and grassy hops. taste is fairly similar. sweet grainy corn flavor and earthy mild hops. thin body, higher carbonation, but something actually feels sorta grainy on the tongue. weird.

overall - my first Croatian beer, but nothing special.

clear, golden yellow color with 1cm white head that disappeared before my very eyes.
skunk, cereal grains, a very classic light beer smell and as many have said, it smells a lot like Heineken. very, very flavorless. there's some cereal grains going on, but not much else. thankfully there wasn't any of the skunk flavor detected in the nose. the finish was dry and again, very flavorless. i didn't get any of the yeasty and spicy notes that others have spoken of. high carbonation. Not that good

M: Smooth. This beer has an average amount of bubbles.
O: Karlovačko is a beer that is very mellow. There are no strong tastes. There are no strong aromas. This beer is smooth. This beer is very easy to drink. People who enjoy light beers should try Karlovačko.

The typical skunky whiff of hops when you pop open the bottlecap. Pours a pale golden yellow. Bubbles like apple cider about as good as it gets. The concept of "head retention" seems not to have made it to Croatian industrial brewing.

Faint malty flavor. Sweet and flat. A hint of tart acidity. Faint hops of the skunky variety, though not so unpleasant. Metallic aftertaste is one of the less attractive characteristics. That's as far as I can go with this.

Seems pretty substandard, even by Euro Pale Lager measures. I can't bring myself to rate this as a Czech Pilsener. Why don't we have a European Adjunct category? However, it has quite a beautiful label, if you like old-timey eastern European graphics. From the 500 ml bottle bought at BevMo, so I get what I deserve.

Beer is often a point of nationalistic pride. People will proclaim their local or national brand the best, which is why it's so ironic that, by and large, these beers are all virtually indistinguishable. One thing's for sure, they look identical. Croatia's national brand looks no different from Serbia's nor Bosnia's (nor anyone else's for that matter). It's clear, yellow, lightly bubbled, and has a fading fuzz over top.

The aroma smells, quite literally, like chicken feed: corn-y and foul. It less resembles "beer" than it does a "beer by-product" (whatever that could possibly be). It does not smell fit for human consumption. For one, there's little of anything that passes for barley or hops (and a nauseating amount of scents that could pass for less favorable, far less natural things). What the hell went wrong here?

Even chilled to low single digits, Karlovacko has a flavour that is borderline distasteful. Not entirely objectionable (for the style anyhow) but the quality of its ingredients, and the quantity of additives, is immediately drawn into question. It tastes of golden syrup, sweet with a strong chemically solvent-like mouthfeel. That latter feature is especially concerning; it does not come from water, yeast, malt or hops.

Bubbles kick in with the urgency of a mother rescuing her small child from a busy intersection. The cloying texture of corn syrup is a little slower to the scene, it sets in mostly on the finish where it unfortunately makes itself quite comfortable. This aftertaste is regrettable because the beer is relatively unoffensive until that point. The chemical-like note that caught my attention from the outset continues to grow. Could it be alcohol?

There's probably a reason this can of Karlovacko has "EXPORT ONLY" printed across its label: Croatians know better than to waste their money on it. Actually, in truth, the opposite is probably true. If I've taken anything away from this plain, adjunct-ridden lager it's that nationalism can delude people of anything, in particular that their beer is somehow superior. Croatians are free to enjoy this (if they can) but I'll pass.

just another balkan region light lager/pils beer. this one pours a decent looking honey color with a one inch white head. aromatically its similar to a lot of the other beers on offer here in sarajevo, bready malts balanced by faint bittering hops in the finish. this one is distinct only because of a hint of floral sweetness that comes in and out of the nose. flavor is quite palatable, none of the metallic tainted aftertaste of its peers, but the sweetness here is out of place, it makes the beer more filling than it should be. its also usually a bit skunky in bottled form. the mouthfeel is okay, less than medium body and normal carbonation. i feel like a lot of these euro lager type reviews sound the same, which is a frustrating reflection of the reality that is standardized brews. still waiting for something distinct over here, and karlovacko definitely isnt that, but its drinkable enough and cheap enough to be on regular rotation for me this summer.

500 mL can from the LCBO; best before Apr. 25 2013. Haven't had a Croatian lager in a while. Some day I will achieve my ultimate goal of ticking the entire former Yugoslavia. Curse you, Macedonia!

Pours a translucent golden-yellow colour, topped with a magnificent three-finger, sparkling white head that wilts away gradually over a period of minutes. It leaves behind substantial quantities of lacing, in addition to the soapy, uneven cap on the surface. The liquid itself, however, looks quite flat, with very little effervescence. The aroma is uninteresting, and differs little from many of these Euro lagers - grainy pale malts, some wet hay or grassiness, with some apple skin.

The taste falls along the same lines - serviceable, straightforward, uninteresting. Grainy pale and cracker maltiness forms the bulk of the flavour, with the grassy, slightly floral, vaguely spicy hop bitterness coming forward in the finish. Mildly bitter finish that doesn't linger long. A little more than light-bodied, but still pretty watery. The mouthfeel seems a little flat, but this is a mild complaint - there's enough crispness to get by.

A passable Czech-style pils out of Croatia, and a pretty good EPL. The hops are noticeably noble enough for me to accept this as a valid pils, but I still feel it would better compare with stuff like Carlsberg and Stella than to Golden Pheasant or Pilsner Urquell. I'd consider getting this again, but there are plenty of other equally worthy selections I might pick again first.

Final Grade: 3.33, a forgettable B-. Karlovacko isn't bad for what it is - a run-of-the-mill pale Euro lager. Better than Ozujsko, and better than many of the more widely-distributed EPLs, but if a genuine pilsener is your bag then this isn't something I can seriously recommend. If you need a highly drinkable, fairly enjoyable lager to drink with salty/greasy food or on a hot patio, this is definitely a worthy selection, though.

Golden amber in appearance with a giant, foamy white head on top that settles at about two centimetres tall and stays well.

Lager malts to kick things off along wih some mild, earthy hops and a very slight hint of grain. There is some bread and corn.

Earthy malts, lager hops with a hint of mild citrus and some bitterness along with it. There is a gerneral sweetness and the usual mix of bread and corn but all of these work well and it is quite a refreshing taste from this one.

Smooth & light bodied as you would expect from a pilsener, there is also good, strong carbonation without being too strong or off-putting. There is a nice fizz to the beer and it is very refreshing.

Nothing really spectacular or ground breaking but a very nice lager and one that I kept going back to day after day, this was excellent whilst sitting in the sun.

500ml can served in a pint glass.

First of all, this is not a Czech Pilsener (as it was described) but a Euro Lager beer.

A: Pours a golden clear yellow color forming a big white fizzy bubbled head. Retention is low and not many lacings are left

S: Sweet grains, mainly. Corn (the killer :)). Light skunky hops in the end

T: Sweet upfront. Sweet grains, corn, Lager yeasts, cardboard. In overall, a dry beer. End in mild bitter

M: Watery body and medium carbonation. Sweet upfront and mild bitter hoppy end

O: Low drinkability. Poor

Appearance was a light reddish. A bit surprising, as based on reviews, I expected a yellow pilsener.

Poured from the brown karlovacko bottle into a pint glass.

Taste is light, crisp and sweet. Extremely refreshing after a run.

Overall, an above average beer, and clearly surpassed expectation.
