This one is dedicated to John, a friend and tavern keeper that recently passed away after running his bar for 50 years. This is the last "house beer" he was serving, as it was from his home country of Croatia. Johnny's Lounge RIP.

In a large mug this looks bright gold, a little darker orange than some. There's a fingers width of foam, with surprising lacing all around. Retention is ok, after the first couple sips it's head is still intact. Lazy bubbles make their way upward.

It smells clean with no off notes, a hint of bready pale malt sweetness, and an herbal noble hop hint when it was first poured. Any olfactory trace of hops seems to disappear quickly though. Not especially aromatic, but more importantly inoffensive.

Flavor is a little bland, though there is a very mild spicy bitterness from the hops and a touch of sweetness. Very dry in the middle, sort of papery with an occasional metallic twang. Carbonation is nice and crisp, and it's definitely a simple warm weather quencher. In the dead of winter, not so much for me.

Cheers John.

A: This beer poured an average golden color. , appeared to have quite a bit of carbonation as I poured at a straight pour which produced about an inch and a half worth of head, which was fairly sustainable.

S: Little to no aroma for this product.

T: Not impressed what-so-ever. The after taste left a feeling of metal in my mouth and I constantly found myself asking when this beer would be over, so I could move on to the next.

M: Mouthfeel was generally plesant not overly full-bodied but slightlly bitter.

D: Not my favorite, but I've had worse.

Overall, I'd rate this about a 1.9 despite my above response.

I poured most of a 500 ml Karlovacko pilsener into a pint glass. It was a very clear yellow and had a fragile one finger white head. I couldn't get much out of the aroma, not even your typical pils smells. This beer tasted sweet but had little other flavor, rather bland. It was light bodied and had adequate carbonation. In terms of drinkability, it would be a good session beer. Not bad, but summed up in one word, bland. Oh well, I was the one who wanted to try a Croatian beer.

Poured from bottle into glass, no freshness date on bottle.

A: Crystal clear gold with a toasted look, plentiful medium bubbles and a soft thin white head that laces a little.

S: Mostly sulfur and skunk, but some buttery grain notes are detectable underneath.

T: Dry grainy malts up front paired with a slight skunky flavor. Shortly the malts start to take on a more toasted flavor, and meld nicely with some minimal hop bitterness as the biscuity aftertaste rises and falls.

M: Quite smooth. The carbonation lifts up the flavors nicely, but isn't too biting.

D: Very drinkable as is common for this style.

Overall: A good Czech Pils, but not the best example.

What starts out as a regular european style lager, comes out with some unusual notes as you partake.

A - Pale light gold

S - touch of skunk at the start, but went away. Notes of straw/hay. Something that makes me think of cigarette ash, and I don't know if that's a bad thing or not, but each time I'd bring the glass up to drink, I'd pause at that smell. No, I don't smoke, and i wasn't drinking it near smoke, heh.

T - Dry, sweet start that turns tart. Finishes dry. Touch of a grain sweet linger, corn like.

M - good. Sugary touch. Smooth.

D - good lager, quenching. Some interesting notes which you could either like or dislike, but probably not in between.

I've tried this brew several times over the last 10 years and is has been very consistent.

The pour leads to a big head that dissapates fairly quickly with little lace. The color is a pale gold. (I'm a bit color blind to it is probably yellow)

The nose is subdued and does add or detract from the beer.

The mouth is quite full for a pilsner particularly with the carbonation stirring things up.

The finish is what I like about the beer. It is on the dry side but leaves a slighty malty finish.

Pours pale golden, fizzy, and with a healthy head. In the nose, it's grainy and with a whiff of adjuncts. Tastes very light, grainy, and perhaps a bit corny. Very light hops. Not terrible, but not all that exciting. The mouthfeel is lightly grainy and soft. Overall this is okay in a pinch. If I were in the Balkans, I'd probably be fairly pleased to find this at a restaurant rather than some other terrible Euro-lager.

A: Pours light golden with a white high head that dissipates after a little while leaving a hint of lacings.

S: Not so strong smell, but there is malt mixed with hops - a nice blend.

T: Malt and some hops (but far to little hops to be a good czech pilsener), some sweetnes and fruit mixed with floral notes.

M: Carbonic acids, with small bubbles. Mediumbodied.

D: The first beer I had from the Balkans, but the Czechs make far better Czech Pilsener than the boys from Croatia. But this is not a bad beer, it just got some stiff competition in the style.

I've been interested in trying beers from as many different areas as I can. This was my first Croatian and I just found my notes. They're pretty recent anyway.

This brew is a pale yellowish golden color. The head poured to about three fingers and faded to a foam, though not as quickly as I was afraid it might, leaving a little lacing behind.
Aroma is predominantly grains with a fair balance of sweet malt and light hops. There's an initial funk on the nose that fortunately doesn't last.
A decent balance of hops and malt on the palate supports the stronger grains flavor. There's no funk in the flavor.
This wasn't as thin as I was afraid it might be. Body is light without being watery. It's also not as crisp as I thought it might be either.
This is worth trying and a pretty good offering.

500ml green bottle poured into a Pilsener.

A: Pale straw color with a mediocre head at initial pour that fades to just surface scum. Light carbonation action the entire session from the bottom of the glass.

S: Light on the nose with a subtle mix of grains, grassy hops, a hint of sourness, and a scant service of sweet malt.

T/M: Perfect Pilsener body with a clean crisp finish. A mild dose of peppery hops on the front of the palate with some doughy malt in the back followed by some hop bitterness.

D: Lacking in head retention, this beer delivers every else. Not a bad brew and within all style guidelines.

Half-liter bottle,

A: Pours yellow with a full, soapy white head, solid retention, some lace.

S: Smells of noble hops, grass, typical Euro lager bottle smell.

T: Malt is bready, light notes of pastry bread. Hops flavour is noble, a green flavour, grass and hay. Good balance.

M: Smooth, light-bodied, crisp, refreshing as a good pils should be.

D: A real nice suprise on the cheap out of Croatia. Went real nicely after a hour of shooting hoops.

50cL bottle poured into a mug.

A - clear, golden yellow color with 1cm white head that disappeared before my very eyes.

S - skunk, cereal grains, a very classic light beer smell and as many have said, it smells a lot like Heineken.

T - very, very flavorless. there's some cereal grains going on, but not much else. thankfully there wasn't any of the skunk flavor detected in the nose. the finish was dry and again, very flavorless. i didn't get any of the yeasty and spicy notes that others have spoken of.

M - high carbonation.

D - not good. definitely a drain pour.

500 ml bottle poured into a pilsener glass.

A- Even a gentle pour, left a big 2-3 finger, fluffy white head. The body was a clear, deep, golden color with hefty carbonation rushing to the top. The head had some great staying quality. Eventually it dropped to a full lace that left nice rings on the glass.

S- There was an initial rush of skunkiness. On futher inspection there was a decent cereal quality to the malt profile that was balanced with some light, spicy hops.

T- The flavor was a little thin at first. There was, again, a nice mix of doughy malts and spicy hops. I was expecting a nice dry finish, but it ended up lingering a bit.

M- It had a fairly clean feel with a significant bite from the hops and the high carbonation level.

D- I just wasn't overly impressed with this beer. While not bad, so many of the key components (aroma, flavor) were just a bit "off."

This beer pours a very light yellow, very clear with a bit of white head. The aroma reminds me very much of Heineken, very much, a bit of skunk, which was a turn off. The flavor wasn't at all bad, no skunk. There is some bready/grainy notes along with a bit of hop flavor and enough hop bitterness to keep the beer from being cloying. The body is medium-light and carbonation medium-high. Overall an easy drinking beer with a bit of flavor, worth a try if you see it.

500 mL brown bottle, $1.29. Croatia gets checked off the country list here. The Lithuanian beer looked like it was in the cooler forever, while this one was dust free.

A hard pour nets a very weak average head. It fades fast to near nothing. Not as clear as I expected, possibly due to chill haze. Very dull pale orange. Doesn't look to style at all.

Smells floral, estery. Has the apple character common to a lot of Eastern Euro pale lagers. Almost apple cinnamon, oddly. Lack of hops. It doesn't smell bad, per se, but the aroma doesn't suggest a tasty beer.

Again, where are the hops? I was hoping for some of that grassy, spicy snap from the Saaz, but this is just bland sweet malt, with weak fruity, flowery hints. Hop use has to be minimal. No bitterness. Not skunked. Finish is grainy and forgettable, and I almost neglected to mention it. Not really pleasant.

Feels full for the style. Undercarbonated, which goes a way in explaining the lifeless head.

No, this is not a very good Czech Pilsner, and not a good beer. Possibly miscategorized. Stick with Golden Pheasant or Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen for a Czech Pils. If I didn't hate to waste beer so much, I would have given up and dumped it halfway through. Below average across the board. It doesn't kill me to drink Euro macros, but this might be the least worthy I've had. I'd have to be in Croatia to think about trying this again.

Poured out of a green bottle(picture on site has brown bottle?).

A- Piss yellow with a light foamy head that quickly disappeared.

S- Skunky smell with slight grainy smell tha most Euro beers have that come in a green bottle. ex. stella, heineken.

T- crisp and clean with a light taste. Could drink many. Good session beer. Very true to the style. Almost a grassy type of taste if that makes sense.

M- Light bodied with just enough carbonation. Not overwhelming to the taste buds which once again is true to the style.

D- High drinkability. Good session pilsner. Could drink these all night. Over all a solid pilsner.

Appearance: This brew pours with a rather full head that has thick foam. Very stylistic of a traditional Czech Pilsner. Color is a light straw. Head sustain is pretty good with clingings to the side of the glass. Impressive so far.

Smell: There is an earthy aroma. Malt and hops permeate the character with faint pine. The aroma is not overly strong but disipates rather quickly. Interesting, but nothing special for a beer of this style.

Taste: The flavor is light and airy. There is a rather strange cream essence that jumps out immediately. This is followed by a sweet nectar feel. Flowery and light. Not oppressive in any sense. Again, an interesting brew.

Mouthfeel: Very light. This is almost a "woman's brew". The interesting creamy presence during onset tends to keep the drinker's attention. I like this. Very airy on the palate.

Drinkability: This brew is about as filling as an American Light Macrobrew beer. Very easy to drink and not filling at all. This would be GREAT selection for female guests during a pool party or summer BBQ.

Prosit!

Pours a golden yellow and very clear. Has a thin white head that disappears quickly into a thin collar and thinner laciness. Aroma is barley and malt and has a sweetness in the background. Taste is sweet with a strong barley presence, mild fruit taste. Decent body but thin texture. Good for a lager, not what I expected coming from Europe. Decent overall flavor, that would be good to have a couple around the house. Not my first choice for a session beer.

A - Poured a clear golden color with a decent white head that fades quickly trying to leave some lacing

S - Has a touch of that familiar euro funk with a grainy malt nose

T - Starts off not to bad the malt is slightly sweet but has a horrible metallic finish

M - This beer has a light body with medium carbonation to it

The green bottle! Never been a fan of anything produced in a green bottle. Clear, golden pilsner with carbonated head that dissipates to nothing. Cleans the pallet. Smooth with hints of alcohol. I find the drinkability higher than what I originally thought.

Pours what looked crystal clear as it was being poured to turn out to be light golden yellow. A white fizzy head forms, but disappears. Despite lacking of retention, some lacing amazingly sticks (not much though).

The smell is of light "Euro-Pale" character and some caramel. I was surprised to see this is listed under "Czech Pils" - I thought I was smelling a decent Euro Pale Lager.

The taste is of some caramel, light standard Euro-Pale character and some grassy notes. There's a vague oxidation/"wet cardboard". It is sweet-ish turning to a dry-ish finish.

I was thinking that this isn't a bad standard-ish EPL. As a pils, it's lacking, but still not bad. I'll say it lands between the styles. In any case, it has a bit of character, though it's a bit too sweetish and bland overall. Nothing special, but inoffensive.

This was poured from the bottle into a pilsner flute.

A - crystal clear golden straw color with a thick head that is well retained

S - gentle malt with noticeable, but not overwhelming noble hops

T - balanced malt and hop flavor, slightly favoring the malt but not by much; overall somewhat subdued though compared to other Czech-style pilsners; surprisingly clean with concern to yeast flavors

M - medium to light body, moderate carbonation

D - This is a decent enough example of a Czech style pilsner, but really falls more into a 'macro-Euro lager' category. The hops aren't as 'bright' as perhaps I would like and this might be a function of age. However, there is no oxidation noted if it is well aged which is a credit to the brewers. This is probably really good fresher and closer to the source.

12 ounce green bottle without freshness dating.

Pours a crystal-clear pale golden color. Somewhat flat, with essentially zero head and faint lace. Smells like cut grass, metallic hops, and light-toasted biscuit malts. Generally lacks in flavor. Some hop bitterness is evident, but there are too many oxidized metal overtones Finishes with unwelcome stewed-corn sweetness. The body is painfully thin and watery; disappears down your throat before you notice it.

I suppose the beer-of-the-month club ran out of worthwhile things to import.

Picked this up at the local beer store for $2.60 500ml bottle. A light golden color, stark white head that quickly fades.Lots of carbonation. Aroma of mild hops and maybe some faint apple notes.Flavor of mild bitter hops and a tiny caramel note. I really liked this, for a pale lager it was very good, did not have that odd baby puke aroma that some pale lagers have. Very drinkable
