Bottle: standard brown 330mL bottle, stylish and cute bottle with an echidna :)

Appearance: pours a solid black with dark brown highlights against the light. A finger-thick tan head hangs about for a time with decent lacing.

Aroma: not much on the nose other than burnt coffee and heavy caramels.

Taste: again plenty of roast coffee and caramels, citrus and grapefruit hops and some earth flavours. Very nice.

Aftertaste: drops away pretty quickly but the caramel and earth flavours do linger.

Mouth feel: lighter in feel with fine but spritzy carbonation.

Overall: I would definitely buy this one again. Not mind-bogglingly, but a good-quality American Black. Well worth the having.

From Slowbeer. No BB.

Pours a black body - brown highlights. Three finger murky cream head subsides. Lacing is wonderful, but frankly the colour looks like concrete.... Not appealing!

Aromas are of chocolate, add roast malts as it warms

Totes is also primarily chocolate driven. Add in roast and coffee later... i am a bit bemused, as little if any noticeable hops were harmed in the making of this beer. Black IPA or hoppy stout... Only one answer. Bitterness is muted on back palates, more like a dry stout in style.

Mouthfeel very smooth... Just like a stout...(!)

I have scored this as 'beer'... If I was scoring to style it would be a whole lot lower.

Pours black with a large head.
Nose shows cocoa, passionfruit, grapefruit, caramel, roasted malt and sweet dark chocolate.
Very aggressively roasty flavours, lots of cocoa and espresso. Also notable is some grapefruit and piney characters. Finishes with a powerful roasty and hoppy bitterness. Almost harsh.
Carbonation is a bit full-on.

Thanks to Mr Kennedy for grabbing this. Poured into a Duvel tulip.

Syrupy dark brown when poured against the light, glossy black in the glass with a dense finger-and-a-half of light coffee-coloured head. Lacing is very healthy indeed. Looks solid.

Nose is sweeter and maltier than expected - more like a porter than an ABA. Used coffee-grounds are prominent, while musk and banana esters contribute a significant sweetness. Roasted malt pungency lifts things a bit. It's nice enough but not at all what I was anticipating.

Taste bears even less resemblance to the nominal style. Gritty brewed coffee dominates again, with the bitterness soaring because the sweet character in the nose is somewhat muted. Hop character is hard to differentiate at first; bitter citrus rind and grapefruit gradually asserts.

Bitterness is high and lasting, but seems to be more a product of the roasted malts than the hops. Carbonation is nice and smooth.

Not sure about this. A bit hodge-podgey with both harsh and enjoyable aspects. Either the bitterness needs restraining or the contrasting elements need to be ramped up.

330ml bottle purchased from Warners at the Bay and poured into a Redoak globe style glass.

Black in appearance, no light penetration, but not jet-black. It has a mocha coloured head of foam that sits above film and laces the glass well.

Smell initially is of both sherbet and sulphur. Thankfully this is replaced by grapefruit, but this is not over the top by any means.

Grapefruit flavour, mixed with some cocoa. Roasted malt comes through late, particularly as the glass empties. Again what is there, isn't there in an all-conquering capacity.

The cocoa flavour seems to add a real powdery feel to this beer. Some bitterness comes in late to parch the mouth. Little harsh in this area.

Overall, it's black and bitter. But i was hoping for something more on any number of fronts.

Poured into a tulip.

A- pours a light black, with about an inch of slightly brownish, tightly bubbled head that slowly subsides. some stickiness. looks nice.

S- straight up is pretty hoppy, whole bunch of citrus, grapefruit and lime, slightly piney. smells a little bit roasty, but the hop really dominate the smell. very nice though.

T- straight up theres a touch of burnt toffee, but the hops come through almost straight afterwards. again a whole bunch of citrus, grapefruit and lime like the nose, followed by that piney flavour again. finishes bitter, but the bittereness is both roasty and hoppy, lasting for a good long while. very nice.

M- nice and mouthfilling but on the lighter side, nice tight carbonation, prickly on the tongue. bitter finish has a very nice length, tasty.

O- a very impressive offering from otway estate. really enjoyed this one, and hope future offerings are as good. nice work.

This brew pours a black as kola hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a creamy one finger head that stays and leaves heaps of lacing everywhere, the smell is really different compared to most other black ales its very citrusy with also aromas of pineapple,pine/orange and passionfruit, the mouthfeel is medium bodied with the first taste being burnt caramel toffee followed by some bitter citrus,a touch of stonefruit, burnt toffee and ends with a piney hop bitter finish and overall the burnt caramel toffee taste definately is very dominant but to be quite honest this is one of this breweries better drops and i would buy again cheers.
