We stopped into Topper's when we were flying out of Helena to go back to the Midwest. Stashed a few things under blankets in my truck that I left in long term parking. Not that any of that is relevant.
The place was super quiet while I was there, and as others have said, Topper was pretty quiet though helpful when prompted. Lots of singles, lots of imports. Picked up a few things we don't get in Missoula due to a zoned distribution system in this state.
Overall, this is worth a stop in the area, but for me anyway Worden's in Missoula is still the best beer store in MT.

Atmosphere: This is an interesting looking place, no doubt. Looks like a place that a Renaissance Fair would enjoy with the round peaked spire at the front. But I digress. As I walk in a ridiculous potpourri scent assaulted me. Obviously this place offers more than wine and beer. But as I walk in I see several rows with beers stored upright and wines laying down. Looks promising.
Quality: All of the bottles here looked clean and without dust. I didn't do much investigation into freshness of their hoppy beers or anything, but everything seemed to look reasonably fresh.
Service: A gentleman that I assumed to be Topper was friendly, as was his wife. I spent a good 15 minutes browsing and didn't hear an offer for help, so I suppose that qualifies for average.
Selection: Topper's probably has the best selection of Euro beers that I've seen in Montana, mainly British and German. They also have a good selection of Montana craft beers, as well as other Pacific NW beers. They have a very big selection of singles, looks like they break down most of the packaged beers that they get. Pretty good.
Overall value is good. I got a few bottles of Ivan the Terrible for a couple bucks cheaper than I had seen them otherwise, as well as a vintage Big Sky limited release for even cheaper.

I had the opportunity to visit this place during a shopping visit for a day in Helena.
I was amazed at the selection in this store! The owner told me that he was actually down from his normal selection but that he normally carries around 650 beers. I'd say there were at least 300 varieties when I was there! I'm probably slightly biased as the vast majority of these beers aren't available in Alberta, at least that I've seen.
I was disappointed though in the service. The owner was very talkative to other patrons but didn't seem interested in chatting with me. He just sat behind the counter when I asked if he had any empty cartons for my purchase and told me the general direction of them. He also wasn't interested in physically showing me where the Montana wines were located, instead telling me....oh well I guess...:)
I'm also very impressed with the pricing on the singles that were available....most being $3.00 and under. I picked up a mix of imports and domestic craft brews. I could have spent a whole afternoon in that store and have to mention that it is also a very visually appealing store. I also agree that if you're looking for wine, they carry an impressive selection of Washington State product!

Stopped in for some Christmas bottles December 2009 and was quite pleased to see what I considered an improved selection from several years prior. The lineup of beers was probably the best I've seen in MT outside of Worden's Market (Missoula).
They carry many of the Northwest lineups and have a great imports selection. They also had several limited release beers from Deschutes and Big Sky and had a great singles selection. The only complaint I had is that several of the singles I got were past their expiration dates - but all tasted fine, at least like they had been properly stored.
Service was great as the owners seem to be quite knowledgable and beer enthusiasts and from what my pops told me, they are happy to order anything they don't stock. Is also a good place to get wine if you need the excuse :) Central location is convenient and easily accessed.
