Plum Market opened in February 2008, and I have probably visited this upscale grocery store at least 25 times. It helps that it is only a 3 minute walk from my house! So very glad to have this place close by. Great grocery store features lots of organic, local, specialty, and gourmet food. Large wine and cheese selection, and a pretty decent sized beer collection as well.

They have two aisle-length, open coolers devoted to beer, and 1 room-temp. aisle-length shelf. The good cooler is filled with lots of Michigan six and 12 packs (Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, Atwater, ABC, MBC, New Holland, Arcadia, etc.), and also a decent selection of other American craft brews (Victory, Clipper City, SN, SA, DFH, etc.). The other cooler has some US macros, and a bunch of Euro macros (Guiness, Newcastle, Carlsberg, etc.). The room-temp. shelf has a lot of nice single bottle varieties, ranging from Jolly Pumpkin, Stone, Rogue, ST, Allagash, to a good number of Belgian, German, and English imports (Rochefort 8, 10, Plank, etc.). Unfortunately, they do not break up six-packs, but the service is pretty friendly and helpful. They seem to get most of the special releases in (for the breweries they carry). Decent prices for Ann Arbor.

Fine selection of local, national and international brews here. The intermationals seem to favor Germany and UK. Rare beers come thru: I just picked up a sixer of Shorts Strawberry Shorts Cake and a six pack of Greenbush Distorter. Very knowledgable beer guy mentioned KBS and some other rarities coming thru at other times. Founders Mango with habanero was on the shelf.

Given the volume and variety, the store has far too little shelf space devoted to beer, and the aisle was quite crowded with piles of cases in front of the beer coolers and shelves.

Value for beer actually seems good, but being from out of state it is hard to tell. As a reference, Unibroue bombers were $7.99. Most food items, on the other hand, are premium priced. This place almost makes Whole Foods look cheap. Hence the compromise $$$ rating.

Excellent selection & display. Staff is also helpful and go the extra distance to help you. For example, i was looking for a 4-pack of a specific item and they only had 3 bottles of it, so they substituted the would-be 4th item with something awesome. Also helps that they have great food available and are right off the highway.

When I visited: March 2012.

What I bought: Bell’s Hop Slam and Hell Hath No Fury, Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial and Madrugada Obscura, Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine 2012, Brasserie Dupont Avec Les Bons Voeux, Goose Island Fleur.

What I liked: Sizeable variety of bombers at fair prices. Good European selection with several rarities. Tons of refrigerated sixers and singles from Great Lakes, Lagunitas, Victory, North Peak, Short’s, and Flying Dog.

What I disliked: Less service-oriented than The Wine Seller, have to watch for out-of-code stock.

Would I go back? Definitely.

Overall Rating: 86

abanton showed me this place in a recent visit to Ann Arbor for the La Roja GR release.

This is a small, "Whole Foods" type market that from the outside you wouldn't expect a great craft selection. Adam led me over to the beer isle, and I was very impressed. A really nice range of beers from great German Hefe's to Belgian Quads like Rochefort 10, St. Bernardus Abt 12, and some a decent selection of Belgian sours. They have a very good Michigan craft selection, and fairly reasonably priced.

The next time I am in the area, I will be sure to stop in. Nice, clean, friendly place.
