Yet another needlessly over-smoky interpretation of a Scottish/Scotch ale. Can't gripe too much because, at only 2.7%, this lil beer had a ton of flavor. I had it on draft at the brewery a few weeks ago, but I think this cask version trumps that tap offering by far.
Whatever they did, they did right by it. The color, rust-tinged amber, was pretty much on. Very nice swell of fairly compact, tan-hued, wet-cottony foam. Like its clarity visually, its feel was clean and refreshing, allowing its fortunate (yet not ideal) balance of moderate smokiness and sweet malt to be fully enjoyed both in aroma and flavor. All that flavor comes on assertively (as much as it can) up front and drops off into a pleasantly smooth, clean finish.
I don't know why the hell I'd want to drink such a weak ale, but I'd drink this again. Only wished they'd dialed back the smokiness a few notches, but I'm sounding like a broken record crying for that.
