Decent enough. The selection is small for beer, but it is a great catch all spot for beer, wine and home brewing. Home brewing is what I feel they are best suited at. The staff can sometimes be a little pretentious, but hey, it is in Asheville, and hipsters are still around these parts. Good enough for a quick stop for beers.

A small store but high on service. They have a good selection for the space they have and consistently get the special releases. They LOVE beer and it shows in their service. Prices are good based on their size and location. Top 3 bottle shop in Asheville.

I recently stopped in this store, and was pleasantly surprised at the beer (and wine) selection available , not to mention they also had a few beers available for samples. While I was in the store, a steady stream of what appeared to be regular customers came in to try some of the new beer being offered (Boulevard Brewing)
I do believe the real intent of this store is to provide supplies for the home brewer, and the owner is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to beer, and by that, I mean brewing, tasting, and the who's who of current beer. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
However, they also stock a very good selection of beer, to include growlers from the local scene.
As far as West Asheville is concerned, you will not find a more complete selection of available beer.
Don't let the wine at the front of the store fool you to as what is available towards the back of the store.

Hops and Vines has a great selection craft beer and wine. The owner strives to keep product fresh. I typically buy my IPAs from here because he keeps his stock fresh (still lots of hop aroma left). I actually went there looking far a particular IPA one time and he said he wasn't selling it because the shipment he received wasn't fresh enough. Same is true for the homebrew supplies he sells. Beer/wine selection isn't huge, but what he has is usually top rated (Beeradvocate Ratings posted on shelf). Be careful...I always spend way more than i plan to when i shop here.

West Asheville following a pint at Altamont and Hops & Vines is right down the street. Sure, I'll stop by.

Atmosphere: A small store with more of a focus on the vines. In entrance, they even have chairs for little ones to sit in (no bottle touching, dammit). Beer occupies the right wall, all the way to the back bar. First warm singles and sixers with a few coolers, including local growlers. Wine owns the left side of the store.

Quality/Service: I was greeted on entrance and had a lengthy discussion with the staff. Unfortunately, the drink I was asking about they didn't carry. Doesn't it always work like that? We discussed some of the local beers as well as the neighbor up the road (Altamont).

Selection: Maybe I'm getting jaded by Asheville. The selection was good by most standards but below some of the other locations in town. Not surprising as it is a wine stop. The nice touch were the pre-filled growlers of Nantahala, Pisgah, and Asheville. I grabbed a Noon Day IPA from Nantahala and almost took a six pack of All Day IPA from Founders but ended up passing. The bar has a few beers (2-3) on tap as well.

Food: Sorry, nothing to see here.

Hops and Vines is a great wine store that also sells beer. The staff is very beer oriented. They offer lots of home brew equipment and even offer home brew classes. Their tastings are great and rival any other tasting location in Asheville. They are located in West Asheville, so they are alone in their market but head to head they blow away their downtown competition. They are located in a shopping strip with a small sign. You need to be on the lookout for the sign when driving by, but once found, they are truly a nice find!

I couldn't stick around until noon when Bruisin Ales opened (plus, I really didn't want to go into town), so I stopped here on my way out of Asheville. It's a really small store, but the selection is solid....very little filler. They have a lot of local beers, and I picked up a bomber each of Foothills Hoppyum and Olde Hickory Death by Hops, which were both in the cooler along with some other beers from the breweries, and other locals like Mother Earth and Asheville Brewing. They also had a small, yet solid selection of North American craft, and they had Stone 15th and Green Tea IPA in stock much to my surprise. There was also a display of Belgians with some Fantome hidden in there as well. The staff was pleasant, but didn't ask if I needed any help. My total was under 30 bucks for three bombers and two 12 oz, which I thought was fair. If you don't want to go into the city and you're in West Asheville, this is a great place to pick up some locals.

Love this place and can't say enough good things about it.

As a beer store, their selection is a bit smaller than the "other place" downtown, but their prices are lower and they stock solid stuff -- an excellent Belgian and Belgian-style selection, and lots of local growlers as well.

As a homebrew shop, they are excellent bar none -- again, more impressive, higher quality, and much better service than their homebrew-shop competitors downtown.

Alex and his fellow shopkeepers are friendly, helpful, and fun to talk to -- although often quite busy.

Highly recommended -- stop by during one of their tastings!

I was on my way to Westville Pub when I parked right in front of this place, so I had to go in. Im glad I did. I wasnt planning on purchasing anything but walked out $30 poorer.

A small little shop that sells wine and beer and homebrew stuff. The homebrew equipment seemed reasonable but not extraordinary. The wine and beer were about equal in numbers. I was there for the beer

A large selection with a large amount of local stuff from Pisgah, French Broad, Highland. The score of the day was a bottle of La Folie. It was a bit pricey for a 22oz at $13 but I have been seeking this out for quite a while. I also purchased a bottle of Pisgah Vortex I, another one I have been looking for. Thirdly, I purchased a bottle of French Broad Rye PA that I enjoyed on draft and am excited to try in the bottle.

The young woman working there was very nice and pleasant and eager to perform her job as well as possible. Its a little out of the way but certainly worth a stop if in the area.
