Golden in color, cloudy in clarity, Echter Hefe-Weiss fits the category wonderfully. The white head was on the small side.

The aroma featured powerful citrus and wheat as would be expected in this category.

The esters of banana were the first notes in taste. The wheat/hop finish would be expected. I also enjoyed the honey flavors that came in the middle.

With a puckering tartness, this beer is slightly heavier than I would normally expect. In terms of drinkability, this is excellent example of the style and would work well after a long summer day.

Appearance – This poured a beautiful orange hazy color with a tight, white, foaming head that showed great retention.

Smell – The yeast and banana notes came flying out of the glass right through the big, foamy head. There seems to be a bit of mild spicing to this one as well.

Taste – The yeast flavor came out nicely here, albiet a little short of the promise at the nose, along with a bit of banana and maybe some mild orange. There also seemed to be a hint of some spice as well; maybe some white pepper?

Mouthfeel – This one showed medium carbonation and was light and fluffy.

Drinkability – This made for a terrific afternoon snack. It had all the components of a good Hefe Weissbier.

Cloudy orange-gold with frothy three finger white head, there was still a sizable portion of head when I finished, and by the looks of it, the rest was left as lacing.
Strong banana taste and aroma. A little green apple, in the aroma, with clove.
Wheat comes out in the taste, a little bit of lemon, a little nutty
Very pleasant, clean and easy to drink, medium body.
Drinkability? I should stop writing reviews at work, I won't be back home and in my fridge to grab another one for hours. This may have ruined some of the lesser Hefe-weizens for me. Next summer I'll go through quite a few of them sitting on the deck.

Not my favorite of the German Hefe's, but it has been awhile, so a retaste is in order.

Huge foam crown lifted itself from the pour. Many gassy bubbles quickly and continually were formed to escape under it all... Aroma and color were equal to the style: cloudy and straw-colored with nose of sweet clove-banana.

Tasted a nice yeasty-sweet liquid, but 'mild:' banana-clove aspects are not huge in this Würzberger beer.

I prefer more to my Hefe's, but this is a good medium offering and especially good for the introductory experience and upon which to base others out there.

A very solid Hefe that looks the part and tastes just fine. From the murky yellow body to the substantial white topping the look is solidly wheat and this is repeated in the fruity and spicy aroma with hints of banana popping through. The flavor is fruity and spicy with clovishness throughout the flavor spectrum. Good mouthfeel with a decent finish. Easily a most drinkable brew.

A almost dark yellow hazy Heff. It has one of the better appearances out of the bottle with a very nice head. At my favorite restaurant they always have this beer and they give you the bottle and the half liter glass to pour it in yourself. Always an interesting event for the people sitting around you. The smell is of a little spice along with a yeasty banana fruity smell. It has a very clean taste that is not overpowering along with a nice clove spice that is a pretty good combination. While I would not call this my favorite Heff I would say that it is a little better then average and I would not pass up an opportunity of drinking this one.

Sampled at the 2003 AOBF: Stammtisch

This weiss pours with a nice cloudy yellow body with plenty of frothy white head. The smell was wonderfully fruity, with plenty of banana and citrus notes, and a bit of graininess. The taste was sweet grain, again with some nice banana notes, fading to a slightly nutmeg-y aftertase. This was a very smooth weiss with a nice, light body. Very pleasant.

Sampled on tap at Anam Cara Publick House.

This hefeweizen poured a cloudy, golden-brown color with pillowy, white foam that left lace down the glass. The smell was a subdued banana and wheat aroma. The taste was lightly sweet with flavors of wheat/grain, yeast, and mild banana. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium body and good carbonation. There was a pleasant, fruity aftertaste. This was a subtle, clean and refreshing hefeweizen, and very easy to drink.

A cheerful yellow color, and quite cloudy. Pours a very nice, almost marshmellowing froth on top, which hangs around just long enough. Smell is light and sweet, as is the taste. There's enough citrus flavor here to make the lemon really optional. I'll admit, I havn't tried a lot of Hefe's, but I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than most of the similar American beers out there.

This is one of those rare beers I'd dare to come right out and call 'refreshing.' I think I could drink this stuff all day.

This beer poured a HUGE white head, with a cloudy translucent yellow body. Highly highly carbonated. It took me several mintues to be able to pour it all into my weis glass.

The nose was a lovely mix of bananna, pears, apples, clove, yeast, some phenols and other spices. Basically a classic german weis.

The taste was very smooth. Highly carbonated. A light bananna flavor balanced nicely against a bitterness. Earthy with a slight citrus peel taste. A little tannic. Sweet. Actually for a weis it tended to be a little more bitter than I'm used to, but it was still very smooth and never once became overpowering.

It ended with a long sweet fruit tannic bitter finish.

Overall just a great example of a classic german weis beer.

Not one of my favorite Weissbiers although much better on draught than bottled. Typical appearance of the style, cloudy golden body with foamy rocky head. Head dissaptes rapidly on this one. Aroma is steady spiciness with clove and yeast out front. One of the most effervescent of wheatbiers, really high carbonation and super crisp. Flavor is wheaty and yeasty with subtle spiciness. Not bad but so many are better. The Dunkel is far better.

This beer poured a very cloudy dark yellow color and formed a nice huge foamy white head that retained in the glass for quite some time and left a solid circular lace as it slowly subsided. A good deal of carbonation is also present. The aroma is of hops and clove with a touch of yeast. The flavor is of hops, clove and spices with a finish that is a touch bready yet light. A refreshing hefe that I still would rate below a few other of my favorites, but still a nice hefe.

Citrusy cloudy excellent Weizen from Wurzburg..this is a very thirst quenching refreshing ale that is great any time of year.. clovey and floral inthe nose with a nice aftertaste.. light carbonation but enough to make the Belgian lace last throughout. Smooth and creamy a real treat.

It's a cloudy golden straw color in the glass. As it was served in a typical German wheat beer glass, it had the nice one inch head sitting on the beer. The smell is one of banana and cloves.

Mild in taste, slightly yeasty. It was light bodied with a slight taste of alcohol in the finish.

Seems to be better on tap than out of the bottle. Not a bad representation of the style, but there are so many other makers that do this style so much tastier.

An ever-rising pure-white head with lots of large bubbles. The beer is cloudy orange-yellow. Not much of an aroma. whiff and whiff - but there is not much there. Tastes ok. Again - not much there. tastes clean and refeshing like a wheat, but less than a good wheat does. Pretty bland for the most part.

16 oz brown bottle no freshness dating.

Beer pours a beautiful peach/yellow color. One of the darkest weiss beers (non dunkel) I have seen. Massive frothy head. Good lacing. A delight for the eyes.

Beer smells of malt, some biscuits and just a hint of spice. A very light smelling hefe here.

Given the appearance, I expected a little more substance to the taste. Nice sweet/tart combination. Some husky malt, but not enough of the clove/spice taste I would expect. Very crisp and easy to drink. Carbonation is excellently calibrated.

I've had much better hefes, but I would not turn down one of these. It is a solid representation of style. Unfortunately, there is the unfulfilled promise of its good looks.

Julius Echter Premium Hefe Weiss: A very deep amber color, extremely hazy. This beer is as deep in color as any hefe that I have seen. This beer has a nice malty aroma that is somewhat unusual for the style. The banana aroma is simply missing. The taste is rich and biscuity malty, but once again, I’ve got to note that the yeast taste that is such an important part of the flavor profile for this style is not present. It’s easy to drink, but I’ve had several other hefe’s that I recommend over this one.

Cloudy yellow-brown color with a lot of particulate yeast rising and falling in the streams of carbonation; I am made to think of a beer snow globe. The large off-white head soon fades to a paper-thin layer; lacing is quite good. Sweet and spicy aroma, more like a Belgian Trappist Ale that a Hefeweizen. Other Hefeweizen-style beers that I have tried were distinguished by a strong clove and ripe banana nose; however, this one is quite different. The clove aroma is still present, but it is much more subdued, there is also a strong tart apple note. Taste begins with champagne-like carbonation on the tongue, followed by tart apple flavors. Bready malt and yeast flavors dominate the middle of the taste. Finishes dry and a touch bitter with lingering clove notes and a ghost of vanilla that lingers nicely. The mouthfeel is smooth and pleasant. An unwaveringly excellent Hefeweizen.

Note: If you should happen to swirl this beer prior to pouring it, be prepared for an enormous quantity of yeast in the glass.

Bought locally (Junior's Beer and Wine fridges), a couple of days in my fridge, reviewed 45F-55F.

Huge, dense, noisy white head. Lacing is runny and flees down the glass to join the head. The beer is whitish-gold, slightly cloudy.

Wow! That's a spicy smell. This thing smells Belgian. The front includes that spice and some fruit. The middle is citrus and butter. The feel is slightly oily. The finish is spicy and dry, with a slight metallic tinge at the cooler temps. The aftertaste is bready.

I really like this baby: fresh, no funk.

Carefully poured it's a surprisingly clear yellow-gold, however, a yeast swirl towards the end of the bottle will bring on the orange-cast and haziness that's desired. The bright white head is creamy and tight. It holds exceptionally well, buoyed by an effervescent carbonation that continually adds to its foundation. It maintains a solid surface covering to the end, and leaves very nice sheets of lace. The aroma is lightly fruity (with some green banana, apple, maybe berries) and sweetish with some bubblegum and light caramel. The body is light with a very fine and lightly effervescent carbonation that caresses the tongue before becoming luxuriously creamy and smooth. Very nice! It almost appears as if the body is fuller because of the creaminess. The flavor starts with some gently tangy malt and fruit; becomes sweeter and more malty with some banana as it crosses the palate; gives a light flourish of clove-like spice just before the swallow; and displays soft bubblegum in the finish along with some drying bitterness, a very light smokey phenolic and some gentle clove. Really nicely done! It's exceptionally well-balanced with a good amount of character and a great drinkability. Well worth trying.

pours a golden blonde that is just perfect in the cloudiness. The head is tinted in gold thick with larger than average bubbles that has started to slowly collapse shaped like a volcano. The head is long lasted. the taste is smooth hops with a citrus finish that again reveals just a hint of hops. Excellent quality here. Delicious.

Served in a 500ml bottle. Poured a light golden honey with a decent head. I love the smell of wheat beers and this one has a great smell. The mouthfeel was excellent and the taste was exceptional. This is one of my favorite beers and will continue to be a big player in my bar fridge. Highly recommend.

Pours a hazy golden color with a thick creamy and rocky white head. Nose is fruity with strong scents of clove. Tastes of lemon, vanilla, and clove. Banana flavors are more mild than in most Hefes. Not the best Hefe I’ve tried but still very nice, and at $2.29 for a pint, it’s reasonably priced.

Muddy orange bodied with a creamy ivory head.
Banana bread, slight clove and wheat on the nose.
Like drinking banana bread batter. The banana flavor is not as pronounced or as forced as many other hefeweizen. Soothed out with the doughy/bready qualities. JE is just so well rounded. Spiciness is low but sufficient. Touchs of clove and a good amount of vanilla.
Body is supurb. Light but solid, creamy and delicate. Just perfect. Makes drinking this an absolute pleasure.
Top of the heap.
