I love a good weiss, and I love a good dunkelweizen, so I grabbed one of each of the Julius Echters today at the SA Central Market.

Pours a dirty orange/brown color that shines a cloudy apricot color when held up to light. Heavy carbonation yields a nice three finger head that eventually settles down to a half-inch thick dense foam. Decent looking lace on the sides of the glass. The nose is assertive and delivers strong scents of banana and clove, typical of the style. I also get a spicy apple strudel aroma, along with some nutmeg. Faint citrus scents in there as well. The taste is a bit weaker than I expected from the aroma. Thinner and with less spice content than I'd hoped. Bananas are here, as are some other, less prevalent fruits. But it's much tamer than I thought it would be. Mouthfeel is smooth, but unspectacular.

This is a really nice beer. But I'm not sure it's the best dunkelweizen I've ever had. Pleasant sipping, and high drinkability, but not something I plan to return to much in the future. Still, at below 5% ABV, it's a totally sessionable beer if you want it to be.

Came out of the bottle a murky brown. Thick tan head dissipated rather quickly. Wheat, cloves and spicy yeast aromas are noticeable. Some dark fruit notes as well. The flavors are a reproduction of the smells. There is a bit of sweetness as well. The end of the sip is a it watery as the flavors disappear. I would have liked a little more carbonation.

Great dunkel for a great price. Perfect for a warm afternoon.

Bottle from Harvest Market.
Pours a cloudy murky reddish brown with a tightly bubbled off white head that shows moderate retention. Aromas of banana and clove with hints of spice, light fruit, and earth. The flavor is fruity and spicy with clove and banana dominating. Light yeasty earthy flavors come in as well. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a bubbly sweet mouthfeel. Nice dark Hefe, a bit bubbly for my tastes but they usually are.
