Style: brown ale
Brewed by: Bray's Brewpub & Eatery
Location: Naples, ME
Rating: 3.6
First had: on tap at their brewery
Fruity and flavorful; probably one of the better browns I've tasted, and I'm not a big fan of the style. Not fruity in a sickeningly sweet way, but nice and tart and balanced. Medium mouthfeel that wasn't too think or watery, which is how I find many brown ales to be.

Enjoyed this as a sample, and then a pint with a Reuben & fries at the brewpub. A beautiful, ruddy, burnt amber hue, it had a wonderfully dark chocolate aroma, bitter, earthy, muddy (just like its namesake). Some yeasty malts & biscuit qualities were also noticable from the finger's worth of tight, thick, blond coffee hued foam that stuck around for while before fading to a thin blanketing of foam that did lace nicely at first, then faded to none.
This is one of the non-sweetest Browns I've ever tried. Its so earthy, muddy (how fortunate there actually is a Muddy River Bog!), dark chocolates, bitter malts but not unpleasant. Those earthy qualities portray a rich, black coffee bite, thick with the silty quality that comes from that last gulp out of the last pour from the pot. Its nice to have a easy drinkin' beer with some serious meat on its bones.
It evens out on the palate, gets smoother, a little creamier, soft caramel, then fades away cleanly bittersweet and leaves a pleasing bitter film, like a 6am coffee would.
This would make for a fantastic session beer. It went very well wih the Reuben, and I could see it paring with a lot of foods. One of the best Brown Ales I've ever had, and highly recommended.
