473ml 2016 can poured into tulip 11/5/16 cheers mathieuc for the can via CaNBIF
A clear amber liquid with just a few streams of tiny slow bubbles, an angry dump down the middle pumps out a thick film of short lived foam that leaves no lace, about what I'd expect at 11.9%, wide legs try to form on the side
S candied mango, dried pineapple and apricots, floral and piney hops, lots of soft caramel and burnt brown sugar, a hint of booze but I'd never guess it's nearly 12%
T still has dried and candied fruit working for it, lots of caramel and brown sugar, some lemon, and grapefruit rind, maybe a hint of tobacco, tastes aged but with a strong hop presence, they must've used a lot of malt and hops to make this stuff
M syrupy and thick, not quite flat but fairly still yet it seems to works with the weight, its crazy smooth for the strength, very little heat going down and how they concealed all that booze is beyond me, oily inside the mouth but a little sticky on the lips, brown sugar and candied fruit just keep going
O I'm wondering if 11.9% in a typo, overly drinkable for a fresh BW of this strength and it's so mellow yet hoppy fresh I don't even know if I'd want to age it
This one hits all the spots, heaps of hops but with a big enough malt backbone to keep it in check and somehow makes a massive amount of booze all but invisible, I want more of this stuff for sure

Directly at the brewpub, ABV listed as 11.9%.
Nice lacing with rust colored body. Flavor is a bit hoppy but lots of banana, some cloves, toffee, burnt caramel and even some tropical fruit and apricots. Mouth coating feel and alcohol is very well hidden.

Nice ruby red beer with a small head and lots of lacing, almost no carbonation visible. At first in the nose you get a huge hop smell (grapefruits, banana, lemons, limes, grapes) almost smells like a fruit juice. It's way more sweet in the mouth, intense caramel taste, some toasted malts too and wine flavor is noticeable. With a really bitter and hoppy finish.

2011 Vintage. I have been sitting on this one for well over a year and forgot I had it. Can't remember who sent this one to me anymore...
Poured in to snifter.
A - Dark copper with a thin layer of dirty white head.
S - Sweet toffee and caramel with raising and figs.
T - Sweet up front with warming alcohol and a fairly noticeable hop presence that adds some floral notes (impressive considering the age). Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisins. A very nice overall palate.
M - Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation.

12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours a deep clear amber, with a finger of rich bright-white head. This retains with some creamy ringing, leaving back a moderately rich cascade of foamy lacing which slowly drips down the sides. The aroma smells of brown sugar, caramel, herbal hops, pine, thick grains, spice, and sweet warmth. There’s a lot going on here and it all has a nice rich depth in the nose.
The taste is similar, with toffee, brown sugar, cocoa, herbal hops, resins, grainy toast, and a good bit of bold spicy sweetness from that big ABV. This finishes dry and warm with lingering notes of pine, spice, and pith. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a mellow prickliness up front that gives way to a huge mouth filling creaminess as this spreads out. Alcohol lingers with some strength but never gets overly hot in the mouth.
This was nice, being an easy sipping bruiser of an American Barleywine, with plenty of burnt sugars and bold sweetness going on with it that are thankfully held in check by an equally assertive hop and spice presence here. I’d love to see what a barrel could do to this.

Imbibed from tulip glass with feet up on the table and Neil Young wailing
Appearance: pours a very nice head with fine foam that stick around; dark tawny so as to be almost black, although the head is light
Aroma: spicy yeast, and something like the woods of a thick forest
Taste & Mouthfeel: very smooth; alcohol is intense - feel it all the way down and up the nose at first; quite acidic, and leaves a faint fire on the tongue; some chocolate, toffee, and a resinous bitterness; heat like a hot pepper' some figs?
Overall: has a complex flavour that just won't let go, absolutely addicting, and the devil on a rocket label should be taken as an indicator of what's to come

So, hey, big scores across the board on this one! This is awfully close to what the beer should be, IMO.
What I'm going to do, here, is to say how it could be perfect (as opposed to giving a straight review of it). 'Kay?
To be perfect for looks I'd want it a touch darker and to have the head last a few more minutes (it's already got a lot going on both of these, eh, otherwise it wouldn't be a 4.5).
In the nose I'd like a touch less of the vinous/prune. Yeah, it's subtle, but it's there - a touch of English barleywine to it, you know? It is all kinds of yummy the way it is in earthy, grassy hops and heavy caramel malts but just a little less prune (there isn't much!) and you'll make me happier!
It has a bit, again, of the prune to the taste. Still, very nice balance of sweet and bitter aside from that one ding. I could go with a little more bitter for a little more balance and a little less prune but, still, very nice.
I'd also like it a bit chewier - just a little thicker in the mouth to be my perfect barleywine.
It's a bit steep in price and that's not helping me in the overall category... But still very nice! Glad I read enough on this site to know that I'd want to have more than one of these! Thanks to all of you reviewers for putting down enough notes and enough specifics so that I can get a clue that it's pretty close to what I want!

Tasted on Dec 13th 2011
Version 2011
Snifter glass
Appeareance; Pours a heavy reddish-brown, seems moderately carbonate with a inch of creamy beige head.
Smell: Fruity with a good caramel presence, sweety.
Taste: Sweet, caramelly and fruity. Good hop level and taste to balance sweetness. Alcohol doesn't taste harsh and support well the long and spicy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Big, full body, a little creamy. Carbonation is mederate for the style.
Overall: Very good. I'd drink that by a fire in a cold winter after a day outside into a snowstorm.

Thanks to hoppypocket for this one!
Appearance. Pours a thick, deep brown-amber with a finger of bubbly tan head.
Smell. Big sweet caramel, candied fruits, a little bit of coffee liquer.
Taste. Brown sugar, a little coffee and canned fruit salad. Some resiney hops in the end, just a little bitter. A little boozy, but not bad considering the abv.
Mouthfeel. Full body with fairly low carbonation.
Overall. Solid barleywine.

Thanks to flipper2gv for this. 341ml bottle. Pours a deep clear reddish-amber color with an off-white head that leaves some film on the beer and a thick ring. Nice spicy aroma that hints of cinnamon red hot candies and ripe fruits, as well as sweet toffee malts and some hop resins. The flavor is a little on the sweet side, but pretty good besides that. Big English toffee on the malt, sugar plum, orange, and molasses, with a mildly hoppy finish. The level of booziness is about what you'd expect, and the carbonation is on the softer side. This starts off pretty good, but eventually the sweetness wears on you, hampering the drinkability. Good to get some nice Canadian ticks in though.

Clear glowing amber body with an off-white head which fades to a hazy cover. Some lacing.
Tons of malt, as you would hope. Lots of sweet caramel, bready, little burnt sugar, some slightly citrusy hops, bit of dusty age (bottle says brewed 2009), faint honey/flowers. No alcohol. Pretty wicked smelling stuff.
While the sweet smell is great, the same sugar comes out in the mouth and ends up a bit much. It's still drinkable enough but I would prefer some extra hops and more of an earthy element to balance out the semi-cloying sweetness. There's a picture involving a Randall on the label; maybe this is how they intended it be served? No off flavours, it's just not totally balanced. Sugary malt with hops following along in the background; hint of pine, little grapefruit rind and a touch of the same cat piss I've noticed in one of their other brews at the brewpub. It's not unpleasant but maybe I'd prefer if they used less Simcoe. A bit of ethanol shows up on the way down. The finish is slightly drying but could be cool if it was intensified.
The feel is a bit strange. I'd like if its medium-light body was a little fuller and while the carbonation is low, something ends up feeling foamy; like it's leaving some kind of frothy residue in your mouth. Can't say I've encountered such a feel before and can't say I'm too into it.
It's been rare that I'm impressed by a Canadian barley wine and this isn't an exception unfortunately. It's okay. Anyway, it's always cool to see a Canadian brewery trying challenging stuff and their brewpub on de Lorimier is awesome. Looking forward to more bottles from Brouhaha but I won't be picking this one up again.
