Bright and cheerful. Two rooms, one with a bar and booths, the other with tables. Brewery logos on the walls.
Twenty beers on tap, four of them their own, the rest from away.
Service was very good, the waitstaff was very helpful.
We split one of their pizzas. World-class.

College hang-out bar/pizza joint/brewery with small L-shaped bar that seats 10 and some tables in room, plus additional tables in dining room. 16 beers on tap, only 4 of their own. The one I had was good. Friendly, if distracted service. I did not try the artisanal pizza.

I've been here several times in the past but recently dropped in after not having visited in a few years. To my dismay, the bar is gone and it's now just a restaurant that serves primarily pizza. The beer list is still excellent but the whole craft beer bar scene is unfortunately gone-and the great vibe that 1702 used to have. I'll find some other haunts in Tucson next time I'm in town.

So I was looking up where I could find Black Butte XXVIII in Tucson and this place happened to be pretty close to me. So I went here and got the beer along with the Mexicali pizza. The service was great, the people were very nice, the vibe was awesome, and the food and beer were incredible. Their beer list is very very long, and most everything looked good. Also just a heads up, on their beer menu it only shows what they have on tap so if you want something like their Black Butte XXVIII you would have to ask what bottles they have in the back.

I was told the slice of pizza was large, but its really about 1/3 of a whole pizza and great. Beer selections were very good between their brews and guess taps. YOU REALLY GOT TO CHECK OUT THE BOTTLE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER - AWESOME. Tell them you are at the restaurant for a 10% discount.

This was stop #9 along a pub crawl for my wife and I and two friends in the greater Tucson area. The pub is located in a storefront setting along the main commercial street in the university district, and is basically a pizza restaurant that serves some beer that they brew, plus they have a great selection of beers on tap (43) and in bottles (?) from other breweries. (My selection rating at 3.0 reflects a downward score because they had only two of their beers available, and an upward score because of the other breweries' beers offered.)

We ordered their two beers (a third one was out) in sampler glasses plus 4 others. Our friend ordered Hopslam in a bottle, so this place is capable of getting some great beer offerings. Both of the in-house beers were graded as being very tasty (the Down Pourter Imperial Porter was rated at B+ and the Saison Dos Santos at B-), so it's a disappointment that they don't brew more selections.

We were not hungry so we ordered only some bread sticks (which were very good), but nothing seemed much different on the food menu that you wouldn't find in any other good pizza restaurant. With only two of their beers to sample it is difficult to judge how good this 'brewery' could be to decide if a future visit would be a good idea, but we likes what we had, so I think we'd go back again if we're ever in town again.

Kickass spot with some cool bartenders. There was one reasonably hot girl and a solid beer geek guy bartender, but also a heifer, but that's EOE for you. Plus beer guys can tolerate a bit of mass more than other hobbies. Not a detraction in my mind, unless they are all like that.

Lots of great beers on tap and the bottle shop is off to a good start. The old man (I think his name was Eric) was entertaining but he's not a beer geek by any means. If that's the same guy who made ice cream at that same place in the 90's, then he's got some staying power. Maybe he owns the building?

Good food, good beer and the occasional UofA hottie? What's not to like?

This place is somehow on a 100 Best Beer Bars list (that's nationwide best) and I don't quite get it.

On beer alone, yes, this place is outstanding. The selection is comprehensive and when I dropped in had a number of different gems such as Bell's Hopslam, Ommegang's Adoration, Destihl's Clarice and a Weizenbock created by a number of Arizona breweries for beer week. There were so many beers to try it was overwhelming, so kudos to that.

Also, the gal that was serving me was a bit of a beer nut herself it seemed and had a number of recommendations and was very accommodating of me as I tried to find beers (since many that I asked for were kicked).

So on beer, this place is a 5.

For food, I'd say it's more of a 3, however. The pizza is massive and good enough, particularly for a college kid, but it really detracts from the great beer selection. There seems to be a real mismatch. I'm not saying I need world-class food to go with the world-class beer, but rather, quality, tasty food to go with quality, tasty beer.

I can say similar things about the atmosphere, which for me was probably a 2. The atmosphere is most evidently intended for the college set. It's cheap, feels kind of dirty and antiseptic, and again, doesn't match the great beer selection. I sat at the so-called bar area, which was nothing more than a glorified countertop and was extremely short.

In an ideal world, I'd have found the same great selection at a spot catering to the 25+ crowd with a bit more taste to it. Oh wait, I did find that and then some, in a place called Tap and Bottle.

Interesting to look back at reviews from 5+ years ago. 1702 has sadly gone a bit downhill. They took out their bar a few years back and replaced it with counter service...and promptly lost the majority of their business. The good news is they put a bar back in, although it's a bit smaller to accommodate extra tables they added. The worse news is the tap curation, once easily the best in Tucson, is just not the same. They still have some of the more uncommon taps you'll find in Tucson, but they tend to be more esoteric-rare than unicorn-rare. They only have a few taps of their own brews (typically 4), but they're always interesting, and usually pretty decent. Occasionally really good. The pizza is also pretty solid, and a huge slice/pie. The pulled pork sandwich is better than most, huge, and a great value. Basically, it may still be worth a stop for the unusual beer selection, but I miss the once-amazing 1702 of yore!

Old review:

Despite a huge number of craft brew specialty bars opening recently, this is still handily the best place to sample brew in Tucson. 40+ constantly rotating taps and not a macrobrew among them means there's always plenty you want to sample. Treat the process and staff right and they are generous with samples. I really like that they offer 5 oz pours for nearly the same price per ounce, and hope that never changes, as there's maybe no better way to drink beer than through rotations of a couple complementary brews at a time. Keep the good stuff going Austin and crew!

Visited recently (2019) and bottle shop is replaced with one cooler with a mix of sdecent to good brews. Very disappointing drop in high end brews. Still worth a visit but not a stop to find hidden gems any more.

Where did this gem come from?
In Tucson for a business trip, and got in late. Not much open beer wise...but POI said check out 1702...very good BA rating, and might be open. Lots of taps, some house beers and supposedly spot on pizzas.
Got there about 5 minutes before close, place full/everyone having fun...but last call had already sounded...depressed.
But very nice bar lady spoke with manager...and he comes over and makes it seem like they just opened. Outstanding! Grabbed a glass of their Imp IPA, and a solid taste of their Imp Red. Both great. Then ordered their Hop Bread ( based on BA reviews). Didn't order their pizza...but aroma was amazing coming out of kitchen.
Lots of great conversation; learning about their beers, aims...and beer store. Beer store?
Well, since no one was pushing me out the door...grabbed a full pint of the Imp Red.
So to say the least...really good people matched up with really good beer and really good food.
Came back next afternoon and checked out beer store...OMG again. Relatively small, but....
Oracle, Hop Slam, 4 different years of Odell Woodcut, Mirror Mirror, great western breweries as well as serious Belgium...and on and on. Just a diamond. Again great people, great conversation.

Been to Tucson a number of times and kinda know the breweries, bars and stores I like...
but after this trip 1702 will now be my first stop... for beer, food, and a few bottles for the suitcase home.

Congrats to the 1702 team...they are what beer places are supposed to be!
Can not recommend enough.

This place has one of the best beer lists in Tucson! I love the variety, there is always something new to try. The atmosphere is casual. Food is good, pizza and calzones only, with a couple of salads available. The different kinds of pizzas available are interesting. And they have hop bread, which is pretty amazing!

All in all, I highly recommend.

The first thing to comment on is pricing. Its not cheap but you get what you pay for. The pizza is the most expensive thing there, but it is freakin phenominal.

The servers are generally pretty nice and they know enough about the beers to help you if you have any questions (which is more than I can say for ANY other craft beer-related bar in Tucson). They have a great selection of 52 different taps (sometimes only 49 or so are on but still great) and I don't think I have ever been in there and seen the same beer on the menu twice (except Duchesse De Bourgogne which I have seen the last 2-3 times and I only go every few months). My favorite things about this place are:

-The number of choices
-The option for flights so you can try all those things you want to try without blacking out
-The hop bread (awesome!)
-And the small but usually good selection of bottles they sell to take home.

I recommend this place to everyone I know that is interested in craft beer because you are not likely to find it unless someone tells you about it (thats how I heard, from customers that came through the line in the grocery store I worked at)

EDIT: They are now open on Sundays too (at least during football season but probably after). They don't offer slices on Sunday but their whole pizzas are better and well worth it. Still the best place in Tucson.

Walking in it feels like a typical college restaurant bar. It has decor with tons of craft brewery t-shirts framed on the walls. There are different seating arrangements to suit your fancy. On the larger tables there are lazy susans built in which is neat. The big complaint I have is that there must be no noise insulation. No matter when I go it is always so loud.

The service is always prompt upon walking in. In no time there are waters and menus on your table. The waiters always seem to be willing to help out in choosing a beer to go along with your pizza. Helpful when there are about 50 rotating beers that change weekly. They also provide free samples if you are unsure about the beer, which is awesome!

The only huge miss at the restaurant is the food. Sad to say, the pizza here really is kind crappy, not inedible, but just a hair better than Dominos. This is true unacceptable considering the price. The only reason I really keep going back is for the beer.

Visited a few times on the recommendation by several BA's.

Typical college-y/divey atmosphere you'd find for a bar this close to a college campus...which isn't a totally bad thing IMO. Smell of pizza pervades the air, a few flat screens showing sports.

Service prompt and friendly, during both visits the attractive female 'tenders were great.

Great selection of 40+ beers, mixed between flagships and some esoteric selection. Good focus on local and CA beers. All were served at good temperature and clean. Good Cali IPA's like FW Double Jack, BP Sculpin, GreenFlash on tap...frankly I could've just drank those all night.

I'm a bit of a pizza snob, and although the "slice" here is quite big, the 'za is a bit bland...crust got a little soggy too. No biggie, as it hit the bill to sponge up the good beers I drank here.

Prices were reasonable, although there weren't any happy hours specials or discount nights.

I'm glad I visited and will return here again when I'm in Tucson.

Really cool place. Large tables to encourage socializing. Almost every brewing company represented on the walls in the form of framed t-shirts or 6/12-pack cases used as wallpaper. Around 50 draft beers to choose from, all served in the proper glassware at the proper price. Excellent representation from around the world and around the U.S. The pizza we ordered was good. We ordered pepperoni and jalapeno but there seemed to be a suspiciously low number of hot peppers present on our pie. Our server was nice and had a great knowledge of beer. Provided samples when requested. We ordered an 18" pizza but one slice is usually enough. Expensive for a slice but they are huge, so it's definitely enough to fill you up. Plus, with all the great beer on tap, you don't want to fill up on pizza. You want to fill up on brew!

52 Taps and they change every few days. Many are uncommon US, some are local, and usually there's even 4-5 Belgians. Some bottled as well but highlight is the drafts. Although Tucson beer selection is universally improving, this is the best selection by far. All beers are available in multiple sizes - a feature not well documented. When you see the price menu, it's usually for the largest size. When your brain hurts on which of the 52 you need to try before it runs out remember, you can get smaller sampler sizes and try more.

Atmosphere is nothing special or fancy -a clean, fairly small college bar decorated with beer T-shirts.

I find the food quite good. The pizza is thin crust and the toppings are fresh. Slices are huge - check the size out before you go overboard. Other snacks are good as well, and they've started making their own ice cream.

Bar sits adjacent to University of Arizona campus and thus is subject to occasional tidal waves of students depending on sporting events, graduations, campus events, etc. At the irregular times of being overwhelmed, best pass and go to one of the other larger college joints.

Among the comments, there have been some disparaging ones about the service. I find the staff friendly, fun, and very knowledgeable about beer. If folks have had problems, it's likely during one of the times when this small place is overrun. Usually, the staff is great - just chat them up about the qualities of various IPAs of the moment and see if you don't discover something new.

This is the best place in AZ for beer, they always have a good rotating selection of beers, 40 something taps.
The atmosphere is good, the place is decorated with brewery shirts.
Their only limitation seems to be those that do not distribute to AZ, they currently have an email campaign going to get Pliny in AZ. I was most surprised when they had a keg of Dissident.
Their pizza is good, a giant slice for ~$5.
I had read that they are working to get permits for on premise brewing and thus growler fills, this would put them among the best of the best.

Visited Thursday 3/3/2011 with the Ratebeer crowd in the early afternoon.

The place is a decent size with what seems like a bar area and a dining area although it seemed like we could have ordered food in the bar area. They have a whole row of taps to choose from and you'll find something you like no matter who you are. I spotted half a dozen AZ made beers, some popular stuff like Abyss and Hopsickle, and some oddball stuff from random breweries.

They offer 5oz glasses, which is great for the tickers or for those who just want to try something before they commit to a full glass (still ticking).

You can buy pizza by the slice and put just about anything on it. Its actually a more like a personal pizza; it's a giant slice. $5 for the slice plus another $.75 per topping.

Since we were there in the middle of a work day it wasn't overly crowded and the staff was able to attend to us easily. They were all very nice and helpful in answering questions and pour beer.

Would definitely return if ever in Tuscon again.

1702 is the best beer bar in the state (sorry Papago). I think their variety changes a lot more than other places. It's a very cool places with a great atmosphere - I like that they've added seating in the second room. A few TVs to keep an eye on games if needed. Beers are served in correct glasses and are always top notch. They know their beer there and it shows. Sometimes it can take a little while to flag someone down to order more, so that is my only deduction here.

The selection is phenomenal. I love that they update their taplist online a lot too. They always get the big new releases and a lot of rarer stuff. Food is great as well - I really enjoy their pizza, bread and wings.

Prices are very reasonable for all beers. Unfortuantely I'm only down in Tucson once a month or so and they aren't open on Sundays (one of the days I'm usually there)

I usually make it to 1702 when I was in town for spring training. There isn't a ton of top end beer places in the desert, but this does stick out as an oasis of high quality suds. Anyway, the selection is always quite impressive. You can see that on their website. They seem to do a good job rotating the selection as well as keeping them tapped.

The food is quite good. The taste is average, but the portion size is gigantic. The calzone I got here was as long as my forearm, and as thick as my calf. They did go a bit overboard with the ricotta cheese, and a bit underboard with the fillings, but it was still good.

Where they have problems can be service. Sometimes you get someone who gives a crap about you, but often times you can be ignored. It should never take 15 minutes before you are greeted after sitting down. plus, once I had a beer half done almost taken away by some grumpy old guy who was muttered some stuff. he seemed friendly with the 4 or 5 employees/regulars who were there, but he seemed to hate us, To be honest, i actually felt unwelcome here. It was an odd feeling. Oh well, I like the food, and love the beer, so I guess I can put up with it.
