I usually make it to 1702 when I was in town for spring training. There isn't a ton of top end beer places in the desert, but this does stick out as an oasis of high quality suds. Anyway, the selection is always quite impressive. You can see that on their website. They seem to do a good job rotating the selection as well as keeping them tapped.

The food is quite good. The taste is average, but the portion size is gigantic. The calzone I got here was as long as my forearm, and as thick as my calf. They did go a bit overboard with the ricotta cheese, and a bit underboard with the fillings, but it was still good.

Where they have problems can be service. Sometimes you get someone who gives a crap about you, but often times you can be ignored. It should never take 15 minutes before you are greeted after sitting down. plus, once I had a beer half done almost taken away by some grumpy old guy who was muttered some stuff. he seemed friendly with the 4 or 5 employees/regulars who were there, but he seemed to hate us, To be honest, i actually felt unwelcome here. It was an odd feeling. Oh well, I like the food, and love the beer, so I guess I can put up with it.

This place is somehow on a 100 Best Beer Bars list (that's nationwide best) and I don't quite get it.

On beer alone, yes, this place is outstanding. The selection is comprehensive and when I dropped in had a number of different gems such as Bell's Hopslam, Ommegang's Adoration, Destihl's Clarice and a Weizenbock created by a number of Arizona breweries for beer week. There were so many beers to try it was overwhelming, so kudos to that.

Also, the gal that was serving me was a bit of a beer nut herself it seemed and had a number of recommendations and was very accommodating of me as I tried to find beers (since many that I asked for were kicked).

So on beer, this place is a 5.

For food, I'd say it's more of a 3, however. The pizza is massive and good enough, particularly for a college kid, but it really detracts from the great beer selection. There seems to be a real mismatch. I'm not saying I need world-class food to go with the world-class beer, but rather, quality, tasty food to go with quality, tasty beer.

I can say similar things about the atmosphere, which for me was probably a 2. The atmosphere is most evidently intended for the college set. It's cheap, feels kind of dirty and antiseptic, and again, doesn't match the great beer selection. I sat at the so-called bar area, which was nothing more than a glorified countertop and was extremely short.

In an ideal world, I'd have found the same great selection at a spot catering to the 25+ crowd with a bit more taste to it. Oh wait, I did find that and then some, in a place called Tap and Bottle.

Despite a huge number of craft brew specialty bars opening recently, this is still handily the best place to sample brew in Tucson. 40+ constantly rotating taps and not a macrobrew among them means there's always plenty you want to sample. Treat the process and staff right and they are generous with samples. I really like that they offer 5 oz pours for nearly the same price per ounce, and hope that never changes, as there's maybe no better way to drink beer than through rotations of a couple complementary brews at a time. Keep the good stuff going Austin and crew
