**HAD THIS AS IRON-BINNACLE BALTIC PORTER
A dark leather brown (I was sitting on a leather couch when I had this, so that is the only description I could come up) with a small head and little lace. A mix of caramelized malts, mostly caramel with some other bitter sweetness (chocolate) and some minor floral hops as well. Taste is more of the same as there is a nice chunk of malty sweetness in this beer, caramel mostly, and the ABV pokes out a little for a drying backbite. Minor hop flavoring, but balanced for the most part and goes down smooth and creamy. Not a great porter flavor wise, but enjoyable. Guess I'm a little disappointed b/c the bartender hyped this thing up as if it were their best beer.

My brother got this as a gift for me in a growler. Had my first taste of it approx. 5 days after the growler had been filled. The appearance is dark brown/black with a fair amount of lacing on the glass. The smell is really extraordinary--one of the best. Hints of fruit, chocolate, wood--without a high alcohol whiff (impressive considering the 8.5%ABV. The taste is also very good -- chocolate, with an almost "candy bar" aftertaste. Smooth goign down which would make the drinkability high. Simply a great beer. Could have this with a greasy burger, or with a slice of chocolate mouse cake.

The beer arrived on the table black with a ruby highlight and a tan long lasting head which laced the glass.

The aroma was fruity with a nice chocolate and then an out of place diacetyl component. The aroma was strong with chocolate, caramel and a nutty and toasty character.

The flavor was diacetyl with a nutty and fruity chocolate flavor. The flavors were a bit of a mess and as the beer warm it was noticeably winey and beginning to sour.

The finish was dry with a lasting acidity far too long into the aftertaste. The body was medium full with a nice carbonation. Too bad this one is heading out to pasture, without the diacetyl and sourness, it could have been a contender.

8.5% ABV according to the description.
