Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, with a frothy, foamy, light tan head. Nose of roasted coffee, salt and brine, hints of chocolate, and some earthy highlights. Flavors are roasted forward, with a sweet chocolate lead balanced by the briny and sea salt notes. Bitter coffee notes dancing in and out, too. Earthy notes help rough up all the salt and sweet. Full, smooth bodied, with a salty and chocolate aftertaste. The finish is smooth, slightly dry, with a salty-sweet linger. Solid beer.

Poured an almost black body w/ minor head on top of a roasted and barley malt aroma, touch of coffee possible, not much sweetness. Taste is more of the same as I pick up dry and roasted malts and minor notes of bitter chocolate but the dryness of the beer is more powerful than the sweetness. Smooth, medium-bodiedf, slightly chewey, this is a good porter but not well-balanced in the porter sense; wish the sweet malts could've come out more.

A: Pitch black with thin off white head.

S: Average. Very roasted. Not well named.

T: Very smooth porter with good roasted malts, too many to count. Also sweet. Everyone at our table enjoyed it and I bought a growler to share.

M: Low carbonation helped to show off the body which was tasty and full.

O: Go to the brew station and try this one and get it to go because this already has very low carbonation so it keeps just fine in a growler.

Enjoyed on vacation, 8/19/11.

Had on tap at OBBS as part of their sampler. This was definitely the best from the 4 beers we tasted. The beer was nearly dead black with little head. The beer smelled malty with a fair bit of toasty, caramel malt. The porter was very creamy and chocolately with a good amount of cocoa powder. This is a very good porter and maybe in a proper glass I could have better enjoyed the aroma. Definitely the best beer I've had at OBBS

16oz pint on tap at the Outer Banks Brewing Station, served on 8/5.

Briny Deep Porter pours jet black, with a little bit of a dark cream colored head. Not enough foam for there to really be any head retention or lacing. The nose is that of intense, slightly sweet coffee. I don't know if it's just because I read it in the beer's description, but I thought I could also smell a little bit of the ocean, a little sea salt. The flavor is that same sweet coffee note from the nose, this time without anything to remind me of the see. The flavor is slightly roasty, and impressive in how much flavor is packed behind a relatively low ABV. The body is especially disappointing, given all the great flavor packed behind it. It's just too light to hold its own as a porter. The carbonation at least compensates by being a bit lower so as not to overpower the body in a malty style of beer. Briney Deep Porter is a very good rendition of the style, mouthfeel aside. The nose has that hint of sea salt to keep things interesting, and the flavor delivers in spades.

A: This poured a dark hazy mahogany with a bit of light tan head.
S: It smelled like the faintest bit of cocoa and roasted barley and coffee.
T: It tasted like dry cocoa powder and coffee grinds, with some cream and burnt toast, and a bit of sweet caramel and sea salt. It had a clean and mellow bitter aftertaste.
M: It was fairly thick with a little carbonation. Nice and full body.
D: This was a very nice porter that was smooth and easy to drink. The scent was almost non-existant, but the taste and body were great. Solid brew.
