12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color. Interestingly enough, the body near the head is murkier than it is near the bottom of the glass - weird. That head is a finger high, with its shade a pip off-white. Retention is pretty good, with a sticky texture leaving behind some lacing on the glass. (3.25)

Smell: This...actually smells like an IPA! Imagine that. It starts off bringing nice (shockingly nice, actually) notes of mango, melon, and grapefruit. As it warms up, the maltiness gradually increases. In particular, I'm getting a good amount of caramel and toffee. The aroma is pretty stereotypical, but actually somewhat well-done. (3.25)

Taste: It tastes like an IPA at around 85% strength. It starts off with grapefruity hops, before a wave of caramel malt appears mid-taste and rides right into the finish. Another thing it has is a yeasty taste - a rather big one. Luckily, the yeast subsides...to reveal a bitter and slightly medicinal aftertaste. Yeaaaah. (2.5)

Mouthfeel: This beer is semi-flabby. It has a big body that clashes with the rather mild flavor profile. Drinkability is medium, but it could have been so much better. A plus: it has a soft, creamy body most IPAs wish they could have. (3)

Overall: A menagerie of pesky flaws make this a subpar IPA. I was wary of this crafty contract brewer when getting this bottle, and unfortunately, my fears were justified. It's definitely in the lower quartile of IPAs in terms of quality. (2.5)

2.74/5: About what one might expect from a crafty IPA...for better or worse

After telling myself i'd never buy anything from this gimmick contract brewer, I saw the relatively good scores this one was getting, and filed it away until seeing a single on the shelf recently, and figured it was worth $2 to find out if the praise was warranted.

Bottle is printed 0094SP, which means nothing to the average beer drinker, and i'm too lazy to bust out a decoder ring today.

Pours a dark saturated orange with a finger of foam, and a thin drippy ring of lace on the opposite side of the glass. Pretty good coverage, a head that lasts for the first couple sips then breaks apart. Hazy with suspended micro sediment, guessing this isn't super fresh. 3.5

Smell is pretty basic and average, lightly citric with sweet caramel malt bleeding through. 3.25

Taste is malty and lightly bitter, some resinous hop character, any indication of grapes isn't really present. Dry bitter aftertaste. Pretty textbook IPA, it could be from one of 1000 breweries, nothing unique here besides the idea. 3.25

Body is fine, fairly malty, more bitter than sweet, medium bodied. 3.25
Overall this isn't something i'll revisit unless it's a fresh draft sample. 3

The color is a coppery dark orange/pale red and clear. The head is a full finger of off-white cream with good retention and scattered lacing that's fairly thick.
The aroma is pretty even between malts and hops. Caramel, bread and barley offset tropical fruits, flora and pith with a hint of something sharp in the back.
The flavor really picks up the hops, and it's a pleasant surprise from Horny Goat. It's pithy, leafy and citrusy with a bit more sweet fruits coming in along with the zest, while malts simply balance and add depth. The zin isn't prominent, choosing a more subtle role and contributing just a little dry must and tannins. A little bit of a briny note sits in the finish.
There's a dryness that builds on the tongue, but not harshly, as the medium body sustains itself for the duration. Its combination of soft but creamy carbonation and biting crispness makes for an interesting parallel on the tongue.

As the paradox of American IPA continue to shift, there are traditional brewers who stubbornly latch onto the ways it's always been. But then there are adventurous brewers who gravitate to what it can be. Horny Goat is the later, pushing the taste of tomorrow's IPA with exotic hops for tropical taste to complement the citrus.

The copper ale opens with a bold hop display- leading with red grapefruit and juicy tangerine. Sweetened with the light caramel backdrop of barley malt, the hops seem to take on riper and more vibrant taste.

Over the middle, the ale simply blossoms. Its caramel and honied upstart turns to dry graham cracker and toasted peanut; still in support of the hops that tower above. Its bright citrus taste develops into tropical taste of pineapple, apricot, mango and passionfruit for a medley that's most seen in fruit punch.

As the beer's bitterness grows to dominate the taste, it carries with it the herbaceous character of fresh-cut grass, chive, and sappy pine needle. The sweetness dissolves and allows the tangy citrus and resinous bitter taste to clean the finish with relative ease. Toast and nut hulls outlast much of the taste except for that long-lived bitterness that's quintessential of IPA.

Lightly weathered copper orange in color with a slight haze. Poured with short, bright white foam that reduced to a wispy cap that left sticky lacings on the glass. Fresh herbal hop and mint aromas with a caramel malt sweetness and hint of pine hops. Medium bodied with aggressive, lively, tangy carbonation. Minty flavors up front that transitioned to herbal hops that provided the tangy bite through the middle. Hop characters balanced nicely with the solid malt backbone. Herbal flavors rolled to the end as this finished dryly with a lingering pine hop aftertaste. The herbal and mint hop flavors are not my favorite IPA flavors, but this was a solid offering nonetheless.
