Pours a very transparent amber color, not a lot of head. The smell is rich with banana and malt. Very mild tasting beer. A bit of caramel and malt, but not much else as far as I can tell. Very smooth mouthfeel. This is an easy to drink beer. I think this beer tastes really good. I could drink several of these in an evening.

2-3 finger head easily possible of pillowy off-white head; head recedes quickly, though leaving a nice spider web lacing as it drops. Body is a burnt sienna with moderate-high carbonation billowing from nucleation points at the bottom of my lazer-etched Sam Adams glass. Now that it has set for a while, head retention is pretty good, staying at a respectable half finger throughout the session.

Lots of butterscotch and toasted grain make the nose for me. Hops, I assume, add to the sweetness in the butterscotch aroma.

Butterscotch turns into thin toffee with some mild astringent roast characteristics coming out close behind. Hops play a supportive role adding low bitterness and some nice spicy notes, though they are somewhat subtle. A little thinner than I had expected, but well within the guidelines.

Light and refreshing, though I could stand a little more fullness to the mouth.

A fine Vienna Lager, which are popping up more and more these days. This one would be good for BBQ (outside on a very hot day).

A - Poured out a clear, highly carbonated, orange/amber color with a small, short-lived head. There was no lace at all.

S - It smelled very grassy and quite malty. Overall, a nice aroma.

T - It tasted malty and of sweet caramel. There were notes of toffee and grassy, citrusy hops.

M - It was very crisp and sharp. It popped on the tongue. A light-bodied lager that was very smooth.

D - This is a nice Vienna Lager. It left me wanting to grab another.

12oz bottle served in a pilsner glass.

L - chill hazed amber color with a beige head that settled down to a layer leaving a good deal of lacing.

S - somewhat sweet, almost fruity with some earthy aromas in the background.

T - sweet tasting beer, wheat and berry with no bitterness until the aftertaste.

F - light/medium bodied, crisp and easy to drink.

O - a decent beer for the warmer months.

Don't get me wrong, this is a well crafted beer, but this beer is one that will make me avoid the small Wisconsin breweries. Actually it is the Horny Goat sampler that will do that. I went to Wisconsin last fall and did a lot of beer tasting, but what has been showing up here lately is not as good.

This lager is nice, full bodied vienna style. It's slightly above average in many respects. The taste is nice and rich for the style - thick. The aftertaste is nice too. None of it is too sweet. I will not buy it again, despite the fact that it's pretty good. This is turning me off to Wisconsin beers.

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada Imperial Pint. No date or info.

A - I wouldn't really call it red. It's more of a clear ambery-orange color with a stark white head. Not very big but it did it's best to hang on for a while. Decent retention and bits of lacing on the glass.

S - The aroma is surprisingly not bad. A toasty Vienna malt character to the nose with a clean aroma. A bit of caramelized sweetness and some light and grassy hops to the finish.

T - The crispness really stands out. It's got the same toasty malt attributes to the flavor with a bit higher of a hoppy grassy flavor to the finish than the nose lets on.

M - Crisp feeling with a good smoothness to it that finishes with a moderate carbonation bite. The dryness balances the malts well.

D - A little later to the party by two months but no where near as bad as I was expecting. A drinkable Vienna with little to offer out of the ordinary but one that doesn't really disappoint.

12oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint. No bottled date. Thanks to BeerFMAndy for the trade.

(A)- Pours a clear orange amber. . . good but isnt this called Red Vixen? Produced a quickly dissipating off-white head.

(S)- Not much in the aroma. A little corn husk & nutty honey.

(T)- Lightly dry, yet lightly sweet. Nothing spectacular, but some nuances of honey, corn, and dry biscuit-like flavors.

(M)- Good carbonation level with a superb balance in what is there. Not too sweet or dry. Not bad for what it offers you.

(D)- A decent beer that fits the style well enough. I would rather pick something else than this, but I respect this for fitting the style and tasting good enough at the same time; a more obscure style to make.

Pours a light brown with active carbonation and a finger of head that recedes to just a thin layer after a minute. Not much smell...some light caramel malt. After the first smell I couldn't get a good whiff for some reason. Carmel malt taste finishing with a mild, crisp bitterness. Medium mouthfeel. Very drinkable with enough flavor to enjoy, but by no means does it stand out.

$3 at the restaurant.

A: decent reddish brown color, clean
S: not much to speak of but nothing offensive, very mild malt
T: actually not bad, I was expecting a lot less but that just shows you shouldn't pre-judge anything!, decently balanced but nothing out of the ordinary, good malt with mild hop finish, just needed a bit more hops
M: good, nothing bad
D: decent enough but just needed a bit more hops to make it a beer that you'd want to have another one

12 oz bottle into a tulip

A: Slightly cloudy, nice orange color. Pours a fizzy 2 finger head which falls right away. Loose carbonation bubbles.

S: Boozy. A clovey tinge with copper and sweet malt.

T: Lighter than expected for the style. Almost a little bland. Lightly malty. Some grain, over-ripe stone fruit.

M: High, loose carbonation. Alittle watery with a drying note.

D: Not what I expected. Nothing really offensive but not good.

Horny Goat Red Vixen
Rex Beverage Holdings
Style: Vienna Lager
ABV: 5.40 %

LOOK: Mostly clear copper, foamy head forms and recedes, leaving little to no lace on the glass. Looks like an unassuming lager though a few shades darker than most in this style.

SMELL: Grains, lager yeast, caramel malt, faint flowery hop character and somewhat sweet smelling.

TASTE: Mild fruity twang, light grains, faint biscuity note, caramel, toffee and very small bitterness. Unoffensive is the key word, and this ends up being a serviceable lager beer.

FEEL: Medium bodied, yet thin. Carbonation is fine. Goes down more or less easily.

OVERALL: A decent attempt at the style. Boring, Yes, Bad, No. Just a ho hum lager and a good gateway to budding craft beer lovers.

Had at the local Hu Hot before and during dinner, served in a frosted pint glass.

Appearance--a reddish orange color...too orangy for my book.

Smell--did not notice or detect any smell.

Taste--sharp and bitter...sour orange and lemon, perhaps.

Mouthfeel--too watery for a good red.

Drinkability--this beer actually grew on me the more that I drank it, but the first half was not enjoyable.

Won't go out of my way to get this beer.

Bottle from a very affordable 6-pack, $2.99, poured into a modified pilsner glass. The first night I tried it, I wasn't paying close attention and thought it had some promise. These notes are from my second tasting.

A. As a few others have noted, this was not RED-red. More of an amber-red, maybe orange, at least when held to the light. The color is consistent with the Vienna lager style, even if the name Red Vixen misleads one into expecting something like Killians. So it's not RED. So what? It's an appetizing-looking, very clear beer, although its thin white foam dissipates quickly.

S. Hints of malty, toasty aroma. No off flavors.

T. Very lightly malty initially, with clean, balanced bitterness. No off flavors, but not much taste here.

M. Not creamy, pushing watery. The low levels of carbonation make this seem smoother than a macro-lager (equating smoothness with low carbonic acidity), but also may be contributing to the thin, watery texture.

D. The first night I tried this beer, I thought it was just interesting enough to try a second. On the second occasion, I changed my mind. While there is nothing offensive about the beer, it is just too bland. The beer seems to suffer from not having enough malt (blandness), perhaps being mashed too low (thin body), and low-carbonation.

Thanks to BeerFMAndy for tossing a bottle of this my way.

Poured into my pint glass the beer is clear golden yellow. Full three fingers of stark white head. After settling a thick coating of lace sticks to the glass like cob webs.

The aroma is light hops and malt and not much else. Fairly muted.

The flavor is even lighter than the nose. Just a hint of malt and hops with a dry bitter finish.

Light body and light carbonation.

Overall this beer is all looks and no substance.
