Notes/Commercial Description:
Snake River Lager is our most popular beer. This is an amber colored Vienna style lager. The rich, caramel flavor is balanced with the use of several hop varieties for a subtle hop note. An authentic German lager yeast strain adds to the true flavor of this beer. The malt forward profile of Snake River Lager makes it a fine complement to pizzas and red meat.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine June 2007.

The world needs more lagers, like this Vienna Lager brewed with Tettnang and Saaz hops, along with Pale, Vienna, Munich and Caramel malts.

A rich honey-amber offering that displays plenty of active carbonation, and a creamy white-ringed lace above and good retention throughout. Aroma is pretty mel- low and clean, with notes of caramel and brown breads. Lively bite, followed by some herbal and lemon flavors from Noble hops. Smooth on the palate. Nice medium body that's round, malty and consistent. Tons of toasty and bready notes, with an embedded caramel sweetness. Tea-like at times. Crackery toward the finish, which has some coarse dry grain to it. Bready linger.

Man, this is one toasty beer! Perhaps a bit too much. After a while, the toasty flavors tend to dominate and overwhelm each sip. A bit less would allow the hops to shine through, cleaning things up and providing some more balance. That said, this is a Lager worth seeking out and trying.

Presentation: 22 oz brown bomber with a best enjoyed before date clearly printed.

Appearance: Orange amber with frothy tiny-bubbled lace. Great head retention.

Smell: Malty with hints of toasted malt and faint caramel, clean to the nose.

Taste: Moderate carbonation, medium bodied and very malty. The mouth feel is extraordinarily smooth as the substantial large toasted malt character creeps all around the taste buds. Subdued hop profile with only a touch of bitterness, this leaves the malt to shine through. A faint fruitiness and some residual sweetness reside in the end.

Notes: On the sweet and malty side. Fresh, flavorful and lively pack in a tight and clean palate. A beer I will unquestionably regard as one of the best in its style.

Served on-tap at Snake River Brewing (Jackson Hole, WY). Reviewed from notes.

A: Pleasing clear amber with short cap of pillowy, off-white head with a nice rim of lacing.

S: Bready, light caramel malty aroma, a little cracker and toast too, with a subtle herbal, earthy hops note

T: The flavor is excellent with bold bready, cracker, and light toast notes, a moderate caramel malt kick, and a subdued, mild hop bitterness that keeps the potential sweetness in check. No yeast esters -- a well made Vienna lager.

M: Very smooth with a good balance of carbonation for the light-medium body.

O: Just a great example of a craft brewery doing a good-to-great job with all their beers. This one is nudging great -- highly drinkable with a wonderful malty, bready presence and just the right amount of caramel sweetness. Good work on this one Snake River. Fresh from the brewery doesn't hurt either.

Snake River Vienna Style Lager

Appearance: clear light brown, medium-large head, and some fluffy lacing.

Smell: hops, grainy malt, and nuts.

Taste: malty grain, nuttiness, and a light hop finish.

Mouthfeel: light and smooth.

Overall:
This is a decent brew. The flavors mesh very well but don't give a large complexity. It is smooth, but maybe to the point of being slightly watery.
