South Carolina is something of a beer desert, and so the state's main Spring Break destination will understandably have limited options. Sun-stroked undergrads don't care if the beer they're drinking is good. Er... actually, they're probably not even drinking beer. They're most likely at that weird Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville place where every 45 minutes the big screen TV plays a fake weather warning about an incoming hurricane and then shitty tequila begins to drip from the ceiling.

So, yeah: Mellow Mushroom. A hallucinogen-themed pizza chain that's popular in the least tolerant parts of the country. The aesthetic ethos is great, but it clashes uncomfortably with the political realities unfolding all around you. I went to a Mellow Mushroom in Savannah, Georgia and sat next to three pencil-necked douches who talked for an hour about how PTSD was fake and only pussies claim to have it. And as awful as that conversation was, it was made all the worse by the fact that we were surrounding by plaster sculptures of stoned-looked mushroom people.

So, yeah: not the nicest vibe, but that's more a fault of the locals, not the establishment. Southerners can't help being awful. That's just how god made them.

The selection wasn't great by first world standards. But keep in mind, this is a state where it's still pretty much legal to beat a gay guy to death if he looks as you lust-wise, so it's not exactly the first world. That having been said, Mellow Mushroom tries as hard as they reasonably can. There's Sweetwater, Magic Hat, Pyramid Apricot--that sort of stuff. And also some Chimay.

Actually, the beer selection was remarkably similar to that of Iowa circa 2005. Very limited, nothing beyond the big national craft brewers. But they try.

If you're like me, and beer factors heavily into your travel plans, then you wouldn't be in Myrtle Beach. But if you're like me in a different sense, and you had to go the Myrtle for business reasons, then it's probably your best bet.

Overall, I found this place to be an enjoyable beer and food experience. A little too stoner-ish for me, but I'd be happy to check it out again (especially in another city) if I had few options to choose from.

Quality, service, and selection were very good. The mushroom soup is delicious.

Decent size draft menu (~40) and bottled beer selection (~60-75) was pretty good. Not a lot of local stuff, wish they had more. Most of the draft or bottle selections were average to top-notch micro-brewed beers I can get from just about anywhere. A little more variety wouldn't hurt, especially of the local variety.

We decided to try this place out while visiting Myrtle Beach for a few days with the family. To be honest, I have been meaning to stop by the Mellow Mushroom in Charlotte for quite some time but have never gotten around to it, so when we saw this one located across from Broadway at the Beach we decided not to put it off any longer.

The place is fairly open with a regular seating area to the left and a bar area to the right, and a fairly large outdoor seating area. The kitchen area is clearly visible from nearly any seat in the restaurant, and the walls are all lined with TVs. Very laid back and comfortable environment.

The service was so-so; our server was friendly, and fairly knowledgeable about the beer selection. Unfortunately, he seemed to be missing in action much of the time. Our glasses sat empty for long periods of time, and when he did go to get us another beer he was gone seemingly forever, at one point we thought that maybe his shift had ended and we had been forgotten...

The food was pretty good, better than most chain pizza restaurants. We got the house special and were very happy with it. The beer menu is pretty good, about the best in Myrtle Beach from what I have heard. There are about 35-40 taps, and most are fairly solid offerings, we both had the New South IPA and were not disappointed. The bottle list is comprised of about 50-60 fairly solid craft offerings, nothing too wild, but not totally boring either.

Overall, it was a good place to go for a beer and a pizza. I think I will make some time to stop by the one in Charlotte now

Atmosphere: Great atmosphere--laid back, mellow, and very enjoyable. Not too noisy, though not quiet either, just a subdued dull murmur from the surrounding crowd.

Quality: Excellent quality--a lot of really nice microbrews from around the country, including seasonals. Nothing too luxury but definitely a nice quality of good beer.

Service: Excellent service--our server gave us a warning before happy hour ended, and even offered to give us happy hour pricing 5 minutes afterward. Service was prompt and accommodating all night.

Selection: Nice selection of beers--not a HUGE variety of beer, but still a very nice selection that can stand on its own.

Food: Pizza was excellent. Have not had many pizzas better ever.

Value: $3 pints at happy hour (4-7 every day, weekends included). Also ran a $2 yuengling special all night. Food was a bit on the higher side or reasonable, but beer was about average if not on happy hour special.
