Had to come to Soma for a holiday work function and I was pleasantly surprised at the beer selection (especially since I was expecting to only find the usual macros out here in the 'burbs). It's by no means a destination beer bar, but if you're in Beverly looking for craft beer, you could do worse.
They only have about 6 tap lines, a few of which are devoted to the boring usuals (Stella Artois, Harpoon IPA) -- and, frighteningly, one of their draft beer listings is described as "Chocolate-covered Blueberry," which is a combo of Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Wachusett Blueberry Ale. That aside, they also have Allagash on tap and, when I visited, they had Ithaca Flower Power IPA as a seasonal and, I think, Great Divide Hercules IPA (maybe one other as well).
So, a few observations:
--GOOD: They have some decent seasonals on tap and a really nice array of bottles/cans. I enjoyed a bottle of Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail (Imperial/Double IPA), which was a rotating seasonal, priced at $7 per 12 oz. bottle (not a bad price for Evil Twin in Mass.).
--BAD: Draft beers are served in cheater pints (14 oz.), but prices are more on par with 16 oz. pours (typically $6 or $7 for craft pours).
--BAD: No proper glassware, and the pint glasses come to your table chilled thoroughly (not great for me, because I wanted to let the Imperial IPA warm up a bit -- not get more chilled after I poured into a glass).
--GOOD: Food was pretty decent. A step above standard bar fare (with prices a bit higher than standard bar fare as well -- but a decent value for what you get).
