The brew pours a clear, deep ruby/light brown with a rich tan head that retains well and leaves some nice rings down the glass. Huge sweet caramel maltiness in the nose with the slightest hints of warming alcohol. Big smeet malt jumps on your tongue with nice carmael tones. There is a slight roasted/smokey/peatish quality to the malt that seems to be so common in the style. The brew finishes with a big caramel flourish and a lingering sweetness that is in no way cloying or sticky. This is a nice winter brew with a thick malty mouthfeel and a medium/heavy body. The brew is fairly smooth and not cloying, surprisingly so, for the sweetness. A very clean drinking brew that doesn't leave the palate ruined for others to follow. This would warm me up nicely on a cold day and I could easily quaff quite a few.

Slightly hazy burgundy hue. Well retained light beige creamy heads leaves attractive lace. Dark caramel sweetness and roasted barley w/ a hint of heaty alcohol in aroma. Flavorwise, it's a smoother facsimile of the aroma. Dark caramel malt upfront, followed by light roasted grain bitterness and pseudosweet alcohol. Mild hop bitterness lends a pleasantly malty sweet overall balance. Subtle dark fruity esters. Moderate in body, w/ a smooth mouthfeel that helps lend excellent quaffability. Finishes lightly roasty and sweet. A flavorful, simply malty brew.

Reviewed from notes, 3/24/04 Michael Jackson Tasting @ R.F.D.'s

Appearance: Medium brown with glints of red. Tan head that degraded to a nice sticky lacing.

Smell: Malty, toffee, prune, cocoa.

Taste: Well integrated flavors, raisin, apricot, toffee, dark malt, fresh baked bread. Earthy spicy notes on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Big and moderately sweet, but never cloying.

Drinkability: This beer wants some food, feed me Seymour!

Served in a sample cup at the Michael Jackson Beer Tasting held at RFD's.

Appearance: Dark brown topped by a tan head that receded to a ring of foam and left small specks of lace.

Smell: Pruny dark malts with a titch of smoky peat aromas.

Taste: Sweet molasses-like malt with a slight amount of bittersweetness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Solid medium body. Robust. This beer will win Scottish Games if you entered it. That caber would be tossed aways. Very smooth.

Drinkability: Me likey. Would be great with hearty foods like game and stews. A lovely beer.

This beer poured into the glass a clear mahogany red color that was very clear and decently carbonated. It produced a thick rich creamy light tan head that lasted fairly well and left behind some lace that was partial rings, and spotty in other areas. The aromas were of sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits, vanilla, grain and alcohol. All noticable but not overpowering. The tastes that rolled over my tongue were of sweet and roasted malts, dark fruits, warmed caramel, vanilla, earth tones, grain, bitter hops (some) and alcohol. All flavors seem to come in and out as this beer warmed in my hands. This beer finished with a light sweet flavor in the front and then left with a light grain taste as you get ready to take another sip. Medium to heavy body. This beer surprised me how smooth and creamy it was, big flavors, nice combination of sweet and dry in the mouth. I liked this beer, and would get again.
