Taken from a competition.

A - Pours a clear dark mahogany with 2 fingers of brown head. Dissipates moderately and leaves nice lacing. Not much carbonation.

S - Cinnamon, smoked peat, and light alcohol.

T - Alcohol, dark fruits and smoked peat.

M - Moderate bodied, well balanced and light alcohol.

D - Drinkable, but needs some work.

a really different take on the style, it came across almost more as a spiced beer, less smoke and earthy malt than i am used to, and a bit less sweetness, although there are still some raw sugar molasses type flavors going on. it looks a little lighter than the norm, more red than brown, and maybe a little thin. i liked its lightness of body though, helped me drink more of it, but the abv has to be darn near 8%, i was really feeling this one right away. i got notes of birch and cinnamon, cocoa, rooibos tea, i mean, there really is quite a bit going on here. complex but well put together, i think it does a slight injustice to this beer to simply call it a scotch ale. not sure whats going on with the grain, but i have to imagine thats where most of these awesome flavors are derived from. lighter bodied for sure, but also a little light on the carbonation for my liking, even in a style like this. also maybe didnt warm up as well as it could have, but an excellent and very unique take on the style.

A: looks like a weak cup of coffee with a copper hue. Just a small ring of white foam around the perimeter of the tulip and tiny specks of lacing on the glass.

S: malt, peat, and a little black licorice. Interesting.

T: nice and malty with a sweet finish that improves as it warms up. I like it.

M/D: good marks here. Carbonation that was missing at the pour is noticeable in the mouthfeel and dries out the front end of each sip before the sweet malts kick in at the end. I had a hard time putting this one down once I started, and could easily enjoy more than a couple in one sitting.

A fine effort from a newer brewer.

I love the color of this beer. Medium to dark bourbon amber with good clarity. Finger width cream head in leuttich balloon.

Wife says the nose is like soy sauce I'm getting a slight toffee with mild orange peel.
Very light bodied, almost effervescent mouthfeel... bubbly on my tongue.

Not much flavor here, the carbonation is masking any real depth. Even after warming it's still on the watery side. I was excited by the color but let down by the drink.

I picked this up at Travis AFB yesterday.

Appearance- dark brown color, nice head but dissipates quickly

Smell- malt, bit of pineyness

Taste- some dark fruit, smoked peat

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, dry finish

Drinkability- It was pretty good. I would have it again.

Stony Bar Scotch Ale poured a real dark brown with ruby highlights. The foamy head was a pretty large tan with a slightly pink hue.

For a scotch ale I seemed to get more of a pale ale nose initially. Pine and tropical citrus fruits were evident right away. As it warmed, more toasty notes of caramel, smoked peat moss, bubblegum, and faint scotch/cognac rounded built an interesting yet strange aroma.

The odd cardboard and peat notes carried into the flavor as well, making me ponder whether I agreed with it or not. I think it works somehow, but it is different. Bubblegum again, and a resiny hop finish close things out.

The medium body had a cottony feel that was pretty dry, especially in the finish. The carbonation is very sharp for a scotch. This one was a bit different, but it all worked together fairly well.
