Pours two and half fingers of tan head on a brown body.
The aroma is mild: toasted malt and lemon.
The taste is fairly lemon hoppy, sharp bitter, slightly metallic and just a little nutty.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
An okay brown ale.

Served from the can in a cervoise at Beelow's.

Yeah, this fourth step is probably enough to keep "The Best of Me" from haunting me any further. It pours a clear garnet-russet topped by a finger or so of khaki foam. The nose comprises maple syrup, light rye toast, mild candied orange peel, and a hint of greenery. The taste brings in more of the same, the maple and rye really taking control. There may be a slight whiff of umami on the tongue, potentially a result of the pork addition, but it's likely a result of my expectations. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, the buckwheat lends this beer a unique character, but it's not enough to elevate this brown ale very high. It's not bad, but not great.

Canned 9/18/13.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, nut, and smoked meat aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet grain, smoke, and slight bacon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of smoke bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with a pretty subdued bacon presence in both the aroma and flavor.

Pour / Appearance: Actually ends up much more ruby red than brown, with very high clarity. Nice head but no real lacing or any retention. The head that is there is a light mocha color and is appealing. There’s not much else to talk about here; it’s pretty but run of the mill. Eh.

Aroma: Oddly, it smells very artificial for an organic beer. Caramel notes and wisps of smoke are there, but there is this lingering touch of plastic that is just very off-putting. Maybe a little bacon? Smells more like burnt hog flavored liquid smoke.

Taste: The taste is the same as the note. Perhaps more caramel than I expected, and the smoke starts to come up in the back. No bacon to speak of; peat or oak smoked wheat would probably have been just as interesting. The gimmick is, very sadly, a gimmick.

Overall: A run of the mill brown ale for a higher price. Smells and tastes somewhat artificial, and the “specialty” ingredient doesn’t have a real place.

Bottom Line: No real reason to bother with this one. If you’re ticking off brown ales to try, go ahead, or if you’re one of those “le epic bacon” jackasses from the internet.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color with a frothy ecru head that leaves a few shards behind

Smell: Buckwheat pancakes topped with a hint of cane syrup

Taste: Buckwheat pancakes and cane syrup, up front, with a nutskin character developing, in the middle; very phenolic, after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: After a good start, the beer fell apart in the finish; if only the advertised bacon was there instead of the phenols, this might have been decent

Thanks, bytemesis (from the other site), for the opportunity

Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a clean, clear brown color, with just a bit of a reddish tint, and had 1/2 inch of light tan head that good retention and low-to-moderate lacing.

The aroma was all sweet malts, no real hop presence, sadly no bacon scent either. There was just a hint of a slight sour/funk smell though. On the tongue, The story was pretty similar, sweet malts, barely there hops, a complete lack of bacon:( , and that sour was just barely there. Maybe if I hadn't smelled, I wouldn't have even tasted it.

The body was good, though pretty typical for the style, medium-full, smooth, and even. Drinkability was good, the beer went quickly and easy enough. Overall, a pretty nice take on a basic brown ale, not special, but worth grabbing a single and giving it a test drive.
