I'm basing this review on memory through the lace of sentimentality.
My 1st Red Nectar was from a hoard brought back from a friends west coast trip in 2000 or 2001 - 22oz. format.
This beer blew us away - as many did back then but this was special and holds a place in my beer heart that fueled the never ending pursuit of the next best beer.
Gorgeous deep amber color, massive malt nose - unique and nutty.
Flavor is sweet but balanced by a deft hand of earthy, coniferous hop bite , medium bodied and super drinkable.
Finish is complex and sweet with lingering mild, grassy bitterness.
It may never have been as good as all that but that's how I remember it.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a murky semi-dark amber color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Slight lace ran here and there.
The aroma had some caramel/toffee malts flowing over some grassy to earthy hop qualities. A little bit of citrusy sweetness came in for a slight balance. Light leafiness and some toast at the end.
The flavor was moderately sweet with a fair balance of the hops trying to pull down some of that sweetness in a bitter fashion. Light aftertaste of some leafiness, earthiness, citrusy hops and toast.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt on par. Nice finish of the leafy to toasty to citrusy character.
Overall, it's a pretty nice amber ale that I could have again.

From notes taken 12/18/16:

Clear, dark, somewhat dull copper, head of yellowish tan, fine and frothy and of moderate retention. Strongest aroma is a lemon-drop like fruitiness, followed in intensity by caramel, resin, leafy matter, and light toastiness. Palate drops most of this lemon drop character, but retains a little. It is mostly resin, leaf, and leather balanced by caramel. A light spicy and bitter aftertaste with lemony and rindy retro-olfaction. Medium-bodied, packed with softer suds, a few prickles here and there. Decent level of astringency.

Amber beer is amber appearance. Deft 1/3" head, white. Nose/aroma isn't really anything to speak of, muted.

Taste comes across as sessionable, real standard amber ale stuff here. Like that generic brewery amber ale. Balanced, neither overly malty nor hoppy or bitter. Nothing off about it, they've been making this accessible beer for at least 20-25 years I would guess.
