I visited this place in mcallen with some friends. It seems that no actual brewing takes place here. I guess they have regional brewers that ship BJ's beers to the local BJ's restaurants.

The place had a very nice atmosphere as everything was clean and new. Paintings of BJ's stable beers and their logos were on the wall which I thought was a nice touch.

I was not overly impressed with the beers I got here. Some of them were decent, but the bock was pretty awful. Also,I wonder how often this place receives it's beer as they were out of 4 beers when I went: the red, the pilsner, the blonde, and the porter.

The server was alright, but she didn't know what was on tap or anything about it.

I was impressed by the selection of the brews here though. They had a decent range of styles, mainly american and german influenced styles, but they did have a witbeir on tap. I was also impressed to see that there were no light beers on tap and that there was a tap line reserved for a special micro.

I think I started off on the wrong foot though. The bock I got was horrible and it ruined my first impression of this place, however I was not so mad when I got the nachos with chili. They were pretty decent and the onion strings were pretty good as well. However, that's all I had.

Overall, this beer had some decent beers on tap. If you ever go here in texas, stay away from the bock!

I gotta edit. The beer service is decent sometimes. The food service is usually pretty good. I'll average it out.

I've been going here at least once a month since the place opened late last year. This review is based on this past Saturday (July 26, '08).

Typical chain restaurant vibe going on. Not surprised to see people drinking Miller Lites from bottles at the bar (considering this is South Texas). At least they could try out the house pilsner or Kolsch-style beers first? Anyway ..

First beer I had was their Witbier which is decent. Lots of orange peel, faint banana flavors with that coriander/hot dog water aroma going on. I dug it, very refreshing. Better than Blue Moon, but not as good as Blanche de Chambly or even Hoegaarden. Could have been more tart, I'm thinking.

Next up was the Piranha Pale Ale .. .oh boy, now this is one of the best American pale ale I've had, and that's saying a lot. I always order this when I'm here and never disappointed. Hoppy as hell with some nice caramel maltiness mixed in with red grapefruit from the hops. Could definitely pass as an IPA.

Afterwards I looked at their Belgian beer menus and wanted to know if they had a Westmalle Dubbel in stock. The bartender went into the back and brought a Westmalle .. Tripel! Thankfully she didn't pop open the cap yet when I noticed it.

I've had a few of their seasonal beers before. The Maibock was malty as hell and their Belgian Pale Ale was a killer.
