A- Dark brown over black, thick coffee lacing with some carb sticking to the glass. Minimal gumming of the glass when swirled. Looks dark and mysterious, like a krakken is hidden in there.

S- Kinda bland here, more malt, chocolate, caramel, big toffee; rum takes a background part here.

T- It comes off buttery; not sure if that is the smooth rum barrel aging, or any weird things going on here. But I like it. Rum aging always smooths a stout out. I am getting some rum taste, with butterscotch after that followed by toffee and chocolate.

M- Very smooth and creamy from the rum aging. Nice amount of carb down the throat.

O- This may be my fav of the ba maples. I really like what Lawsons is doing! Cheers you crazy east coast cats

375ml bottle from 4/2014 poured into a Lawson's snifter 5/31/2014.

A- Dark black body, one finger mocha head with good retention. Looks slick and resinous, a bit oily even. Not much lacing.

S- As it was served chilled, the nose took time to develop into cocoa, graham crackers, sweet rum, molasses, milk chocolate, roasted malt. Really a very nice nose once it warms up.

F- Roast malt, sweet rum, graham crackers, milk chocolate. Less of the cocoa and dark chocolate than in the nose, on the sweet side but still balanced nicely by the roast. Interestingly, this started out with some fusel alcohol flavours, but as it warmed up, that disappeared. I suspect that I am confusing the fusel with a component of the rum barrel.

M- Medium bodied, slick but soft and creamy. Slight earthy chocolate finish that is a bit dry. Quite drinkable for 11%; a bit of booziness but not a lot initially; and even that seems to go away as it warms up.

O- Plenty of rum barrel, base stout is still solid. I enjoyed the non-barrel aged version more, but this was still a very nice treat as nothing is over the top here.

375ml bottle poured into a Tree House tulip. Bottled April 2014.

A- Pours a dark opaque black with a thin quarter finger head that has about average retention receding to a flat top, light spotty lacing, minimal carbonation but nice consistency and about average for a stout of this size.

S- Milk chocolate with a slight fudge aroma, light well integrated rum, decent amount of oak, hints of maple in the background, and some booze.

T- Milk chocolate, maple that accentuates the milk chocolate nicely, integrated rum that adds a little bit of a boozy component, finishes with more milk chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and some wooden oak. A little bit on the boozy side but nice stout flavors.

M- Fairly smooth, on the viscous side being a bit creamy, nice carbonation for style.

O- This was a nice beer however the rum made it a bit on the boozy side and I think I prefer the other variants (bourbon and maple barrel) a little bit better. Awesome to try and definitely worth seeking out. I think a year on this might definitely improve it a bit.
