hard to critique a beer this good, i mean, this whole series has just been immaculately delicious and unique, and i am thirsty for more! the rum is hard to stack up next to the maple barrel, which i think is among the best beers ever made. the rum is a little more abrasive, especially in the flavor, and it affects the feel a little too. i love it in the nose, cane sugar and spice with a hot booze content to cut down through the dense dark grains a bit. it really succeeds in the nose there. in the flavor though, the sugar seems like double jeopardy, where the sweet maple is almost taken over by an even sweeter raw rum thing, and i dont like anything that takes away from my maple experience. the booze is intense too, not quite distracting until it warms up, but much more intense than i remember it being in the others. the spice of the rum does do really nice things with the dark roasty base of this, almost a turkish coffee vibe for a second before the booze and the maple rush back. seems a little thinner too, not quite as rich as the maple barrel, not bad, just different. all told, these are some of the very best beers in the world, and comparing them really isnt fair, its more of you have to appreciate each one as an individual, and thats easy to do. thanks to drlovemd87 for making my day with these each time. vermont rules. (1,345 characters)

Small chocolatey colored head. Smells of nuts, coffee, slight notes of raison. Taste is bold with notes of dark chocolate, sweet malt flavors perfect balance of rum alongside it. Perfect mouthfeel to compliment the taste. This beer is right up there with the best of the world class imperial stouts that have been flourishing in the modern beer world. (351 characters)

A- Thick khaki-brown head that sits upon a body of motor oil goodness. Eventually it settled to a half-finger head that clung to the sides of the glass.

S- Thai Coffee. Maple, praline, pecans, mocha, sweet pipe tobacco, rum spice, fig, star anise. A bit of booze, but nothing overpowering.

T- Big roast and milk chocolate that's immediately balanced by dark fruit/spice complexity. Finishes with more booze... I actually get a good amount of the barrel.

M- Thick, slick, slightly chalky. Some of this reminds me of an old red wine. Quite tanic.

O- Delicious. A bit sweet and cloying at times, but the nose is amazing. (626 characters)
