Bottle opened on 12.23.12

A - Pours a motor oil brown with a huge brown head with great retention.

S - Sweet syrup, chocolate, oak, almonds, dark fruit.

T - Maple, subtle chocolate, acidic wood, with a coffee finish. Smooth.

D - Great carbonation with a heavy body, silky.

O - Very smooth and silky, nothing was over powering.

750ml waxed bottle into a snifter

A: Pours dark brown with a huge brown head that fades to a layering and leaves some lacing on the glass.

S: The nose starts with maple right after you pour it and as it warms you get nice notes of chocolate, vanilla, and a slight hop aroma in the background that is a bit odd and something I wasn't expecting.

T: The taste starts with the hops and then fades to vanilla, cocoa, along with a touch of maple.

M: The feel is creamy and on the thicker side of medium.

O: This is a great beer but it could use less hops and more maple. I didn't get much oak besides a bit of vanilla .

The beer is near black with a bubbly tan head. The aroma offers roasted malt and an abundance of oak. A bit of maple syrup makes its way into the flavor, but this is surprisingly less complex and wonderful than I was hoping. That said, this is good stuff. Lots of oak, some roast and subtle chocolate. I would have this again, but wouldn't trade for it.

Borry and I decided pre-draft festivities needed a bit of pep. Red waxed bomber into snifters goes a little something like this...

Loads of brown fluff atop a sturdy, if a bit lighter than expected, base. More lace than your typical sexy time parlor.

Smells nice: sweet roast, toffee, melted chocolate. There's a warm gooey character that's difficult to explain but appeases me sniffer....almost like a barrel kissed melted sundae.

Dark fruits, touch of green apple tartness, brown sugar, and some oak and berries on the finish.

Lighter bodied, supple carbonation, and creamy.

Overall, it smells better than it tastes but I'm pleased to have tried this. Thankfully, earlier reviews of an oak bomb are not indicative of current results.

Pours a dark, dark brown with a thin tan head. The head and lacing actually look like they flecks of gold in them. Beautiful.

On the nose is alcohol infused chocolate, roasted dark malts and then notes of sweet sugary goodness, most likely from the maple syrup. Smells very rich, dessert like.

Roasted dark and chocolate malts showcase much of the bitterness in this beer. The oak really comes through as well with lots of woodiness. Overall, this stout is a strong mixture of dark malt and wood. The maple syrup takes the back seat, but its sweetness is noticeable at times. Alcohol is also apparent, but not too strong.

Mouthfeel is smooth and rich with light carbonation and warming alcohol.

Drinkability is pretty good. This is a stiff stout, especially with the large dark malt bill and the strong oak. With these characteristics and the 10% ABV it is definitely a sipper, but an enjoyable one.

Overall, this is a pretty awesome brew from a relatively new brewery, which is exciting to see. The flavor was maybe a little more on the bitter side than I would like and the oak was a little on the strong side, but those are fairly minor complaints. I don't know if Lawson's has any plans to tweak the recipe, but I think they have a really good start on this one and I will definitely be picking up more if I can find it.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter. I was lucky enough to try this one along with the other three versions.

The beer pours a dark brown, almost black color with a layer of tan head. I'm getting sweet roast, maple syrup, and some dark fruit in the smell. The taste is full of roasted malt notes along with some alcohol. I'm still getting some maple, but the sweet notes aren't as prevalent as the barrel aged versions. I didn't think this one was as complex as the other beers.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 7 held at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, wood, and some slight maple aromas. Taste is much the same with a woody aftertaste on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that has a very woody presence in the aroma and taste.

A- Pitch black viscous body-no light passes through. Pours with a small light brown fizzy head that fades to a thin collar. No lacing is left behind in the glass.

S- Nose is sweet with maple being the main character coming through. Oak, vanilla, molasses, and dark, rich chocolate malt are also quite noticeable components to the nose.

T- The main character upfront is dark, roasted malt. Accents of maple syrup and oak are also noticeable but come through more for the finish. The finish has the slightest phenolic bitterness- a mild alcohol warmth and mild roasted malt linger.

M- Mouthfeel is good, its quite thick and syrupy-but has a very slight phenolic consistency to it as well.

D- This is an interesting stout. There is a lot of oak and maple character going on here. It does have a bit of alcohol heat-but overall this is a smooth, great stout and I'm happy I had the opportunity to try it!
