A regular brought in a bottle twice at Max's Hopfest (from notes, 8/16-18/13)

A: Cloudy, golden copper.

S: Sweet citrus and grass. Excellent.

T: A lot more subdued and nuanced than Heady Topper.

M: Slight carbonation that goes away fast.

O: Top notch. Gets better the more you drink it as the flavors develop and build in your mouth.

From the 10/12/13 release, so about two weeks old. Tulip glass.

A: Pours a pale straw color with a few cm. of delicate, bright white foam. Average retention, leaving the glass with a solid ring and some swirls on the surface, and a few streaks of lacing.

S: Light, faint malt and a little lemon, then herbal/grassy notes, a little juicy orange and kiwi (?). Pretty well balanced and a relatively restrained aroma.

T: Bright, juicy tropical (kiwi?) and citrus, grapefruit pith, finishing with a mild-to-moderate bitterness which provides some balance, and mild sweetness. The finish is a nice contrast of sweet and bitter, like you would get from chewing on sugar coated white grapefruit. Delicate flavors.

M: Medium body and medium-high, nearly sharp, carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden.

O: A very good DIPA., highly drinkable and refreshing. I could see this as a superb hot weather beer. Not quite at the level of Alpine, Pliny, or Heady, but a solid second tier option. It doesn't have the big aromas or flavors that you might expect from such a highly rated IPA, but it excels in its balance just as I think Pliny does.

Thanks to Mikeypnh for the trade! Pours a hazy golden with thick white head that settles into a thin cap. Good retention and excellent lacing. As looks go, this is one good looking Imperial IPA. Lots going on in the aroma - tropical fruit, citrus, hints of pine and a distinct cat urine aroma. The best word to describe the nose - WOW! Sweet citrus hits the tongue first quickly followed by a strong hop bitterness in the middle and through the finish. All that Hoppiness is beautifully balanced by a solid malt backbone. Layered, complex, balanced, this IPA has it all.
Medium bodied with good carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. Overall, this is textbook DIPA; tropical fruit, bitter pine resin, balanced by a sweet malt bill, this might be the quintessential DIPA. One of the best crafted DIPAs out there!

22oz bottle generously shared by Doug while we were brewing beer. Poured into a Bell's snifter today, 9/9/2013. Review #201.

Note: I revisited today 10/25/2013, with a 2 week old bottle from FleetwoodMatt, poured into an unlabeled snifter.. and didn't change a thing on this review. This beer is fantastic.

This beer's appearance is really something else. Pours a thick, creamy and hazy orange body. Having had a bunch of Hill Farmstead IPAs/DIPAs lately, this is just so different. It has a strong orange colour on this. Comes with a 2cm white head with very good retention. Looks very soapy on the surface and as lacing. Lacing is all over the glass.

Smells so good. Smells so citrusy, but without much malt sweetness. Simply put, this is a hop aroma bomb. So much citrus here- tangerines, orange, and a little bit of grapefruit.. a little bit of breadiness and toffee attempts to balance it out, and its efforts are very much appreciated. It's a very strong, thick aroma. Wow.

The taste on this is delicious. Unlike the nose, the malts come out here more to just balance out the hops, but barely. Lots and lots of tangerine, mango and other tropical fruits balanced out just a bit by some caramel and toffee sweetness. There is some earthiness here, surprisingly, which mixes things up as far as Vermont IPAs go. It's also a rather bitter DIPA unlike the Hill Farmstead DIPAs.

Mouthfeel is really good in its own way compared to Hill Farmstead. It's not as smooth, but it is quite slick without going over the top. Solid carbonation, medium body, very resinous feel on the palate. Bitterness is high up there too, yet it is very drinkable without any hint of the 8% ABV.

Delicious DIPA. It's a nice change-up from the less bitter but oh-so-aromatic-and-creamy Hill Farmstead DIPAs. It's got that über aromatic nose and palate stinger.. yet it is so drinkable in its own way. It definitely provides a very full, complex sensory experience. Definitely lives up to the hype. It's probably my favorite DIPA overall, which gives it a 5/5 overall rating for me. Close to Abner and Ephraim, much better than Heady or Pliny. Highly recommend if you know a generous BA in Vermont.
