Gold wax. Unsure of vintage but assumed to be 2014.

A - Poured a deep inky black with a thin layer of medium brown head that reduced to a ring around the edges of the glass.

S - An intense oak aroma with chocolate fudge, roast, maple syrup and a hint of coffee.

T - Chocolate fudge, sweet molasses and maple syrup, roast and a hint of espresso with a big oak presence throughout. The finish leaves a sweet maple syrup flavour lingering. Enough bitter roast to perfectly balance the sweet maple notes. A beautiful beer.

M - Full body, silky and somewhat creamy. Light carbonation.

Bottle of this one from cparles in a recent box. Cheers for this one man!

From a 375ml bottle into a snifter
December 2012

APPEARANCE: Thick black pour, very dark, yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with excellent retention. Fades slowly to a full cap and clings to the sides a bit. Pitch black body with medium levels of carbonation decorating the top of the wisp. Swirly wisp and thick ring remain until the end leaving some solid lacing down the glass. Really good looking.

SMELL: Lots of roasted malts, milk chocolate, vanilla notes, maple syrup there for sure, with notes of oak and toffee as well. Really nice. Bold enough, with lots of nice syrupy, milk chocolate, creamy goodness, but could be a touch more forthcoming.

TASTE: Lots of sweet flavors up front, with maple syrup, sweet vanilla cream and milk chocolate initially. A bit of roasted malt at the swallow, then more sweet flavors with maple, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel and oak as well. A touch of bitter dark chocolate and roasted flavors as well, providing balance. Bold and lingering aftertaste shows all this sweetness with a touch of bitterness mixing in well. Flavorful and really interesting.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Really creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. No heat. Smooth and creamy stuff.

OVERALL: This is really good stuff. The maple barrels lend quite a bit of sweetness to this beer, but there is plenty of layers to the flavor, making it interesting instead of monotonous. The roasted malt and hop additions add a touch of bitter flavor that tries to lend some balance as well, which works. If I can remember correctly, this is probably the best of the Lawson's Maple Stout variants to date. Or perhaps this batch was just superior to the older ones, as the other variants I drank were earlier batches. Doesn't matter really. This drinks down really easily as well. Thanks again cparles. Great stuff.

Finally was able to snag this one. 375ml bottle, gold wax. Poured into a Farm House tulip. Opaque black in color, with a full two fingers of lush, dark brown head, which sank to a thick layer and held there, lacing the glass nicely. Big aroma of caramel, milk chocolate, moderately roasty malts, honey, maple, oak. This was easily the best Fayston stout I've had so far. Taste reminiscent of chocolate-chip pancakes, giving way to a more coffee-like roastiness, lending a moderately bitter aftertaste, notes of charred oak, sugary maple, and a slight kick of fusel alcohol. Body was on the heavier side of medium, might as well just call it full, mouthfeel was smooth and luscious, even with being slightly thinned out by booziness. Great brew overall; I'm saving my other bottles, looking forward to opening one next time I have a bad day.
