Deep, deep brown bordering on black with a nice two ½ finger light tan head. This cap of foam decreases in size but remains ever present. Smells really woodsy, with some dark chocolate and licorice, almost damp. Complex woodsy maple syrup attack. Smokey and chocolate. Rather long finish which is slightly bitter like bitter cocoa. Rather lush, full and just a bit chalky but nice. Pretty tasty offering and very glad to have had the chance to sip this one

750ml bottle poured into a CBS oversized snifter.

A - Pour a dark brown color with medium clarity - just a light haze. A thin finger of tan head fizzles away fairly quickly leaving behind a thick, foamy collar and uneven surface layer of bubbles. Sparse lacing is left around the perimeter of the glass.

S - Boozy on first sniff, almost bourbon in character, a bit surprising considering there is no barrel aging here. Thick and rich malt base - smokey for sure, caramelly, dark brown sugar, lightly maple-y, woody. A bit buttery, more than a little bit of root beer, light vanilla.

T - Warm and giving a rich boozy sensation on the inhale. Expected a bit more harshness, but the alcohol is kept in check and is rather smooth. Maple stands out nicely...much more noticeable than in the aroma. A touch of sweetness remains to it also. I can get a bit of an herbal underpinning to the beer, based in licorice and root beer with root beer in the lead. Vanilla lends a mildly sweet, smoothness to the beer and I think brings out the root beer more (reminds me a bit of the draft root beer at the local stand as a kid, which I am pretty sure was a mix of some concentration of vanilla cream soda). Smokiness is noticeable and up front especially after warming a bit in the glass and works well mixed in with the multitude of things going on here. Notes of caramel and molasses are here for good measure too. Somewhere between a candy bar and an alcoholic soda for me...which is a bit of an odd thing - but a good thing too.

M - Medium body with a medium carbonation. Vanilla especially comes on strong after the beer warms a bit. Feel is smooth, slightly warming but smoothly alcoholic. Noticeable on the inhale and exhale more than in the actual body of the beer itself. Maple flavor/sweetness is quite nice here. Root beer, althought probably off-putting for some/most, is a bit of an enhancement for me. Pretty unique.

O - This is a bottle that I have been "avoiding" opening. I figured I would not like it, expected to be disappointed and even hoped I would hate it. Perhaps I set my expectations too low and it is affecting my opinion, but I am really, really enjoying this beer! It is certainly unique..boozy, sweet, smokey, candy-ish, soda-ish. Complex and different. I imagine this beer could be a bit polarizing...I am definitely on the positive side of the scale. After expecting a let down, I am more than pleasantly surprised by how much I like this beer.

A: pours deep brown almost black with shades of brown hues around the edges, off cream head dissipates into 1/4" and no lacing is left behind.

S: sweet aromas of maple and yeast, some yam and dark fruits, faint notes of smoked in the back.

T: the smokiness comes forward as the beer first hits your tongue, in a dry way somewhat reminiscent of bacon. Same as in the aroma, the dark fruits like plum are present.

M: full bodied, dry and well rounded, pretty mellow and leaves some notes of maple and oak behind.

O: nothing outstanding, but well done nonetheless. The added ingredients are well represented along this journey.
