The beer pours a clear, coppery amber with a foamy off-white head that laces. The nose is citrusy, caramely, and metallic - little in the way of hoppy aromatics. However, the beer drinks with good balance between the potently bitter hops and honey-like malt backbone. Though I think the beer's malt profile is on point, the crushing, repetitive insult from the hops make this beer's finish unenjoyable - a factor that improves as the beer warms. This beer is medium bodied with abrasive hops, exceptional malt sweetness/grain flavor, and a lingering grapefruit rind bitterness. This is a tasty hopped up ale that's a bit overly bitter, but has tremendous flavor.

Dry-Hopped on the High Seas: Citra
Straight pour from a 12oz can to a teku glass; canning date of, I think, January 8, 2014 printed in black ink (it’s hard to read, on account of being very blurry) on the underside of the can (“CANNED ON JAN 8 2014”). If I’m reading it correctly, that’d make this can nine days old at the time of consumption. Freshhh.
Appearance (4.0): About two fingers of cream-colored foam rise out of the pour, capping a somewhat hazy orange-tan body. The head dies down at a moderate pace, leaving thick, holey clumps and splotches where the collar sat for a while, linked up by webby legs of lace. Generally it’s got a great look, but the lacing is just a bit sparse for my taste.
Smell (4.5): Classic Citra: some tangerine and passionfruit, which is sort of like melony pineapple juice, is paired with a dank, resinous tone that underlines everything else going on . . . the malt is pale, plain, and a little sweet, like a floury biscuit with a little honey drizzled on it. Citra dry-hopping really makes for a good aroma for IPAs.
Taste (4.25): The flavor of the Citra largely follows the nose, but with more of a bitter, resinous edge to underscore all of the juicy sweetness within. Tangerine flesh, a little more of the kind of melony passionfruit sweetness, and then a hefty, oily grapefruit juice bitterness that lasts well into the finish, which brings in some minty, grassy bitterness along with it. Generally speaking, it’s not mind-blowing in any way but it’s very, very good in every way.
Mouthfeel (4.25): Some modest carbonation foams up softly and lightly, tingling but stopping short of prickling . . . the body behind it is medium-weight or a little under, and chased out with a very dry, resinous finish that fits the style very well.
Overall (4.25): I love these single-hop IPAs for showcasing the properties of one hop or another, but generally the base is made so straightforwardly that the end product is anywhere from somewhat above average to very good, but almost never mind-bending. This one falls into the very good (or a bit higher) range, thanks to Cigar City’s ability to brew a solid base beer and deft use of Citra and its unique character. $11/six-pack? Definitely worth a buy.
Dry-Hopped on the High Seas: Hop #529
Straight pour from a 12oz can to a teku glass; canning date of January 30, 2014 printed in black ink on the underside of the can (“CANNED 1/30/14”), making this can twelve days old.
Appearance (4.5): Two full fingers of bone-white head come off of the pour, capping a lightly hazy, honey-colored body. As the head dies down, it leaves a thick, clumpy-lumpy collar of foam all the way around the glass, along with a second collar of wide swaths of lace here and there an inch lower on the glass. Scattered suds here and there around the glass besides . . . this is a fantastic-looking beer.
Smell (4.25): Not surprisingly, it’s a tropical sweetness—but rather than dryly acidic, it’s mellower and a little richer, showing the nectary smoothness of papaya, melons (honeydew and a little cantaloupe) and passionfruit . . . there’s a bit of orange, pineapple flesh, and key lime underneath that stuff, brightening it up a bit. Any malt is pale, a little sweet, and bready, and lost within the fruit.
Taste (4.5): Markedly different from the nose. Fruity, sure; hoppy, without a doubt. But it’s got some of that smooth, melony fruit up front, followed up quickly by a bittersweet key lime flavor that pushes forward into a nearly astringent, raw grapefruit peel bitterness that stops just short of parching. The malt’s a little more present, but pleasantly and dryly bready, like dry, yeasty biscuits and common crackers. As it warms up, the hop profile turns very grassy, which I like, but it still retains a crazily citric, hard-to-pin fruit bitterness. Passionfruit and key lime juice, maybe? This is really great stuff.
Mouthfeel (4.25): Hits spot-on for the style, but extremely tight: kind of loose, lightly tingly carbonation all through the body, with a light-side-of-medium-weight body, and a veeery dry finish. Exceedingly easy to drink and begging for more.
Overall (4.25): Really digging these #529 hops, whatever they are/will be. I prefer hop varieties that have flavor that goes beyond juicy sweetness, and this definitely does. I like all that just fine, but give me something a little more dynamic and uncommon, and I’m a happy camper. #529 does that very well, and the IPA built around it is, as always, sturdy, flexible, and generally well-executed all at the same time. I heartily enjoyed this beer.
