Pours Jet black with some foam remaining. Rich roasted coffee nose. Sweet dark chocolate taste. Bourbon and cherry hints at the finish. Bitter close. Smooth and rich. Very good and flavorful. Solid. 4 4 4 4 4 4

On tap at the Brewpub. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Nice khaki head. Some lacing and sugary legs. Thin collar.

Smell - Dark chocolate. Coffee. Lactose. Caramel.

Taste - Chocolate up front. Lactose is strong. A bit of a twang from it. Fruity licorice flavors. Doesn't taste like a stout.

Mouthfeel - Medium light for a stout. Sweet but not syrupy.

Overall - Different kind of stout. I suspect a Belgian yeast strain.

Thanks to Sonny for giving me the bottle. Split 3 ways at a tasting. Full notes taken at time on IPad.

A- Poured to a tulip and chalice with a pitch black body. Dark mocha tan head rises to about a half finger high with a creamy texture. Falls fairly quickly to a small, frothy ring that leaves nice spotty lace all over the glass, like a leopard.

S- Not much stout things happening here. Lots of fruit in the aroma, ranges from apples to figs and slightly tart cherry. Something like a Scotch with the fruits, hard to put a finger on it. Roast malts and cocoa take a back seat.

T- Sweets and fruit lead the way in the flavor. Cherries, plums, apples, figs and raisins come to mind and it reminds me a bit of ferment off flavors I got in my homebrew stouts. Dark cocoa, roast grains and some caramel back that up. Something like a barrel, just unsure of what's going on, tart twinge too.

MF- Medium bodied, maybe even a bit light for the aim with a somewhat watery texture. Carbonation on the lower side and it only seems to accentuate the fruity strangeness.

Strange fruitiness pretty much dominates the flavor and aroma and reminds me of homebrews in a way. Decent cocoa and roast but the fruits destroy.

Cigar City Brewpub's Mud Hill Stout

Served on draft in a snifter 10/30/2013 at the brewpub. Limited bottles released totaling 250 according to the brewmaster.

Pours very dark with a tan two finger head. Smells of coffee and perhaps a hint of caramel. Chocolate notes become more apparent as it warms as does the bitter finish. Texture is velvety smooth but not as viscous or creamy as other CCB stouts I've encountered. Overall, quite tasty and worth a shot if you stumble across it. Another fine brew from the team at the Cigar City Brewpub..

On draft at the brewpub today. Pours a pitch black with a very small light brown head. Aroma of bittersweet baker's chocolate, big roast, and some dark fruits. Flavor is different. Flavor begins with some earthy dirt that fades into chocolate covered cherries, figs, and plums. There is a hint of funky sour here, very sweet, and a lingering chocolate covered fruit/berry on the palate. Velvety smooth mouthfeel but not super heavy for the ABV. Overall, this was OK. I'm not a huge fan of the big fruit flavors in my stouts but it was a unique and relatively enjoyable experience.

Wow, this beer was good when I bought it a couple years ago but it has now become great! Smooth, mellow, dried cherry/raisins, chocolate malt balls, great flavors. Really drinkable. The only down side is I would like a touch more alcohol warmth and body to really emphasize the flavors.
