#3 1/24/14
A thick dark brown with a likewise dark brown head, this beer looks like many imperial stouts out there. It does show some give at the edges. The head's retention is good, though it doesn't exceed half a finger's height. Structure is strong, though, and lacing displays it with sturdy patches.
This is a big and robust beer, dry but with lots of richness to it. There's a ton of roast giving way to smoked woods in the middle that remain into the finish. Nut comes through underneath bigger flavors including chocolate in the front and a hint of tobacco leaf from front to end. It finishes woody and dry with notes of ash or cedar. I can see lovers of big American versions not liking this as much as what they're used to with the dryness, but the integration and use of the dryness in flavor and feel is quite masterful.
Speaking of, yes, the body's dry, but it's also rich and smooth with a light crispness in a good, firm body with the strength to carry through from the beginning of the first sip to the end of the last.
