Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter. This has at most a couple months of age on it, as it was released recently.

Appearance: Pours a deep, deep brown (near-black) and leaves a couple fingers of deep tan/mild brown head. Good looking beer.

Smell: Big aroma: Roasted malts, smoked malts, coffee, smoked meats, wood, dark chocolate. Very enticing aroma. Not unlike cooking meat over a wood stove.

Taste: Big smoked malts, candied bacon, dark chocolate, coffee, straight smoke (very interesting), cedar. Nice big flavor, but also fairly easy drinking. Lovely woody finish.

Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation with a medium to thick, creamy body.

Overall: A really different and delicious stout. I love the smokiness to it, its subtle and really well balanced. This would definitely be a go-to if it were easily available. An impressive brew for sure.

In true Cigar City fashion, a classic Russian Imperial Stout would not be good enough. The envelope must be pushed- an this time it is done so with heavy smoke, fruit, earth and a fragrant bouquet. Yep, and somehow we're still talkin' stout here.

And none of that is in any doubt as the ale pours pitch black. Its opaque appearance stares right back at you with its onyx-like sheen. A creamy froth builds on top and caps the ale like the foam of latte. Bone-white in its honeycomb structure, its retention is long and its lacing is broken yet even.

Aromas of forest fire rises first and continues to dominate the session. Heavy smoke and perfume waft about the nose with a background of roasty sweetness. Burnt toffee and scorched cream support its heavy peat and fragrant cedar. Once the nose acclimates, fruit tones of plumb and dates rise along with the herbal presence of curing tobacco and singed pine needles.

Its taste is more pleasantly balanced. The sweeter malt flavors of toffee, burnt toast, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and light molasses add a robust sweetness and bitterness that counter the smoked plank elements to come. Its middle is alive with smoke and fruit as its plummy taste is met with smoke-cured meats for a rich and savory tone. The ale finishes earthy and scorched, leaving an aftertaste like lit Churchill cigar and peat-smoked whisky.

Full bodied from start to finish, the ale carries a weighted sense early because of its low-lying and deeply embedded carbonation, but once the ale breaks apart a bit, its texture of ash and char offers a powdery dryness to its finish that exposes its scotch-like burn. Its long smoky linger gives a spicy wood prickle to boot.

This is one serious Russian Imperial Stout, equipped with fruit, biscuit and hearty sweetness. Though the smoke is a bit overkill, the ale still exhibits what's best about the stout underneath. Its probably sublime to bigger fans of scotch whisky and robust cigars.

#3 1/24/14

A thick dark brown with a likewise dark brown head, this beer looks like many imperial stouts out there. It does show some give at the edges. The head's retention is good, though it doesn't exceed half a finger's height. Structure is strong, though, and lacing displays it with sturdy patches.
This is a big and robust beer, dry but with lots of richness to it. There's a ton of roast giving way to smoked woods in the middle that remain into the finish. Nut comes through underneath bigger flavors including chocolate in the front and a hint of tobacco leaf from front to end. It finishes woody and dry with notes of ash or cedar. I can see lovers of big American versions not liking this as much as what they're used to with the dryness, but the integration and use of the dryness in flavor and feel is quite masterful.
Speaking of, yes, the body's dry, but it's also rich and smooth with a light crispness in a good, firm body with the strength to carry through from the beginning of the first sip to the end of the last.
