"A tropical IPA dry-hopped on the high seas with one of our favorite hops: Citra". Brewed in the style of an American IPA and dry hopped with varying hop varietals. Available in 12 oz. can 6 packs and limited draft. I am reviewing this beer alongside two other varietals, Ahtanum and Calypso (find my review on their respective profiles). Limited rotational release.

Poured from a 12 oz. can to a tulip glass. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy, crisp head of a ecru-white complexion over a hazy golden amber body. Clarity is impeded by significant haze and sediment. Carbonation is vivacious and plentiful in this varietal in particular. Retention is above average, lacing is light and streaked. Appearance is similar to Ahtanum in density and color. 3.75

(Smell) Biscuity, cracker malts pair with a modestly bitter hop profile. Citra hops generate a grapefruit, tropical fruit, citrusy and resinous character with moderate undertones of herbal and floral characteristics. Potency is moderate-full. Easily the most profound and aromatic of the three varieties I sampled. 4.5

(Taste) The Citra hop creates a lemony, fruity and grapefruit-like character with a light peppery backbone that does more than accent the lightness of the malt profile. Bitterness is moderate- more profound than the Ahtanum and nearly on par with Calypso. 4.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, clean, mildly dry. Carbonation generates a mellow crispness for a soft, airy mouthfeel. The body is shy of medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is low, there are no off characters. 4

(Overall) Perhaps the most predictable of the three hops and the only one I’ve knowingly experienced before, Citra has the flavor potential to impart big juicy citrus and peppery characters to create some truly fantastic hop-led beers. The bitterness wasn’t quite up to Calypso’s standards, but Citra was well balanced and most importantly, a great flavor addition to this beer. My favorite of the three varietals I reviewed, standing in front of Ahtanum with Calypso a bit further behind. 4.25

The beer comes in a completely opaque lemony yellow with some butterscotch orange.

The aroma is absolutely incredible of bright pineapple, citrus peel, light grapefruit, tinges of mango and peachy sweetness, passion fruit, a light bready malt. Just a wonderfully hop juice aroma.

The beer follows with tart guava, tangerine, grapefruit peel, honey dew with a heavy fruit heavy character. A medium bitterness throughout as there is a biscuity malt that backs up the beer. The beer bitters on the finish of bitter grapefruit peel and slight herbacious qualities.

The beer is wonderfully clean and hoppy with beautiful light, vibrant tropical and citrus coming through. Few beers get my approval as having similarities to Heady Topper, but this does. It is freaking incredible.

A: Pours a nice cloudy orange color with a thin layer of head.

S: Very bold hoppy aroma from the Citra dry-hopping. Very good aroma.

T: Solid level of bitterness and a great citrusy hop flavor. Also, a rather present sourness.

M: Well carbonated beer with a nice thick mouthfeel.

Overall this is an awesome beer with a well rounded experience. Good hop aroma and flavor with a complimenting mouthfeel.

Poured from can into Pint Mug.

Appearance- Hazy light Caramel/Tan Khaki Color with a nice 2 finger creamy white foam head which dissipates at a steady pace. Excellent sticky lacing.

Aroma- Citra Hops front and center followed by typical floral pine notes, grapefruit, lemon zest, and faint honeysuckle & bread.

Body- Thin to Medium body with descent carbonation and a slick/oily consistency.

Flavor- Starts with Citra Hops and floral pine. Followed by strong earthy melon rind bitterness. Finishes with a zesty citrus & mint dry finish.

Overall- A fairly unique IPA with such a heavy Citra Hops presence and cascade of flavors as the beers works its way down. This definitely is my favorite to date in the Dry Hopped Line of Beers.
