Canned 2/21/14, Poured form can into a pint glass

A- pours a clear and bubble golden-yellow color with a thick and creamy two-finger white head that seems to retain forever, as bubbles continue to shoot up the glass. The head actually grows the longer it sits, huge patches of lace are left behind

S- crackery toasted malt is first noticed, mint and floral hop with a touch of lemon grass

T- very subtle tropical mango/melon flavors up front mesh with some floral notes, sweet malty body mid-palate leads to a toasted malt finish with faint lingers of pine and fruity hops

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a big creamy mouthfeel that continues into a smooth finish, high drinkability

O- this one drank more like a pale ale to me, not enough hops to stand out. Still an easy drinker that went down way to smooth to be over 7%

6 pack of cans from Proof. Pours a orangey amber with decent off white head, good lacing, and a medium collar with wisps of head remaining until the end. Aroma is a great blend of the citrusy hops and caramely malt sweetness. I also get some some sweet grass and faint spice in the nose. Spice comes out a bit more in the taste, but at the end. Up front I get some stone type fruit and citrus, with the malt just behind it. The sweet grass is also really noticeable in the taste. I like the spice linger on the tongue, the hop bitterness is also nice. Body is on the thin side of medium, and the carbonation is fairly low.

Poured into fluted snifter; mostly clear golden orange with a rocky white head that fades quickly into a dense puck of foam with tapered edges, spotty lacing on the glass as the foam pulls away.
Smells great; passionfruit, floral, other tropical, pine, fresh grass, citrus rind.
Taste is an interesting take on the usual tropical IPA. It's very citrus forward, with fresh lime coming to mind amid fresh cut grass and earth, citrus rind and pine, and lighter tropical fruit.
Mouthfeel is smooth, well-carbonated and crisp. Dry bitter finish.
Overall, another entry in the Hopped on the High Seas series that I've enjoyed. I love these exotic hops, and look forward to finding the others. Think I'm only missing Ahtanum now...as long as you don't believe the various duplicate entries for these beers.

12 oz can

Medium amber with a large, irregular, frothy white head.

Hopped up and moderately bitter but not harsh.
Complex fruity taste with citrus and other tropical fruits. This slowly reduces to bitter grapefruit peel in the aftertaste. Grassy, herbal, and floral notes.

Feel: Medium body and carbonation.

Cigar City Brewing - Hopped on the High Seas dry-hooped with Kohatu
12 oz. can, dated "2/20/14" on the bottom

Appearance: Clear yellow-gold body. Fluffy two-finger head of bright-white. Excellent head retention and very good lacing.

Aroma: My first impression was that of a janitor's closet! It's minty and sweetish with a hint of lemony citrus. Some mild malt and some other fruity notes makes their way through if you look hard enough, but the minty hops really take over (for me at least).

Flavor: As in the aroma, the hops seem to be the point of this beer, and that's OK, it's a noble experiment. You get to really know what these hops are like (I've never even heard of them); and as such the malt is just a base for the experiment (straightforward, mildly grainy). I guess that's where the designation "Caribbean-style IPA" comes from. So, again, it's minty, and just subtly piney with background notes of lemon and perhaps other citrus, as well as some pear or melon. It's bitter as would be appropriate for an IPA, and it finishes dry and hoppy but it's not particularly lingering.

Mouthfeel: Crisp. Medium bodied.

Overall: An interesting beer. I enjoyed learning about the characteristics of the Kohatu hops, and it's well-made, and surprisingly balanced, but it's not a beer that I'd particularly return to. Still, I think I've got to rate it pretty well based on it's technical merits and not any hedonistic preferences of my own.

12 oz. can poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Bright orange. Kinda hazy. Medium white head that settles to a thick collar and some surface wisps. Sticky lacing inside.

Smell - Floral and tropical. Kinda soapy, too. Bit of grassiness to it. Doughy malts.

Taste - Much soapier. Pine hops. More citrus than tropical fruit. Cracker malt and some strong bitterness, like the other versions.

Mouthfeel - Bitterness feels more intense on this one. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Definitely smells better than it tastes, but I'm still enjoying every version of this series.
