Poured from a 12 oz can into a clear glass mug. Canned on 03/14/14 on the bottom of the can. Received as a generous gift from good friend Erinn.

A: Peachy amber with big 2-3 finger ivory, frothy head with excellent retention and copious lacing down the mug from top to bottom.

S: There are signs of tropical fruit, mango mainly, with some lightly sulfuric peach, but mainly it is big-time resinous and earthy hops with a substantial bready, light caramel malt backing. There are some lighter grapefruit and lemon citrus notes as well.

T: Flavor is in-your-face but with a kind of nondescript, raw, almost minerally, super tart bitterness that builds to be overpowering in the finish. The lemony notes come through more and more through the beer with the tropical fruits really not detectable at this point. The is a lot of pine resin and herbal, earthy honeysuckle notes as well. Maltiness is not wimpy and very robust with a light toffee caramel note. The bitterness is very high and builds to be very tart lemon and mineral in the finish.

M: The mouthfeel is substantial, medium-high body and very coating with the resiny nature of this brew. Carbonation is medium.

O: This is an interesting beer to try but not one I would want to have more than one of because of the supercharged bitterness.

A big shout out to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell has some floral notes, a bit of citrus as well. Taste has considerable bitterness, some resin flavors, light malts, a touch of citrus. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but not up to par with some of the other IPA's from this brewery.

"A tropical IPA dry-hopped on the high seas with one of our favorite hops: Calypso". Brewed in the style of an American IPA and dry hopped with varying hop varietals. Available in 12 oz. can 6 packs and limited draft. I am reviewing this beer alongside two other varietals, Ahtanum and Citra (find my review on their respective profiles). Limited rotational release.

Poured from a 12 oz. can to a tulip glass. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foamy copper-tinged white head over a pale copper amber body with fair clarity and some slight haze. Retention is very good, lacing is spotty. This was the clearest and darkest colored of the three varieties I examined. 4

(Smell) Denser bready malts with a light sweetness and grainy body suggest a more robust malt profile than the other two variants. Calypso hops are very mellow in their aromatic presentation, with traces of sweet grapefruit, floral and and fruit tones, none of them particularly profound. The aroma from the hops is very weak overall. Potency is low. 3.5

(Taste) The malt body of the Calypso variant is different from the other installations, with a slightly more viscous sweetness, a fuller malt body and a heavier presence. Again, the Calypso hop doesn’t impart much flavor aside from some herbal and peppery character to this beer, while fruit and citrus are stretched thin. A moderate bitterness can be expected, suggesting that Calypso may be a good bittering hop. The least potent and least impressive flavored of the three varieties, even with the change in the malt profile, it’s nothing spectacular. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is chewy, slick, slightly full. Carbonation creates a mellow crispness for a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) I can understand a slight malt recipe change in Calypso because the bitterness is likely the most intense, although as a dry hop it’s still a far cry from DIPA bitterness, one needs to keep in mind the balance necessary to make an enjoyable beer. Regardless of these changes, I didn’t find Calypso the best choice of hop in this series as the flavors weren’t well carried into the beer, which makes a significant difference in a beer where hops should be stealing the show. Calypso seems best rendered as a bittering hop used in conjunction with a musty or peppery hop to amplify the dankness or perhaps teamed up with a hop known for its tropical fruit properties and citrusy nature for even more flavor diversity. In the end, it was the least impressive of the three varieties, despite being the freshest of them all. 3.5

12oz can. Pours a translucent reddish ornage color with over an inch of frothy white head. Some lacing. The aroma is tropical and citrus fruits. Some dankness. Not a big nose on this one. The taste is herbal hops with a noticeable malt presence. Tastes boozier than expected and somewhat medicinal. Tropical fruit notes but mostly its that medicinal and herbal taste. Aspirin aftertaste. I thought this one was going to be fruit forward but instead its mostly herbal hops. Mouthfeel is oily with a lot of carbonation. Overall, all set with this one.

Poured from a can into a shaker pint, the beer is a light, vibrant, caramel-copper coloring with a tall, foamy, fluffy, off-white head. Nose of tropical fruit (pineapple and melon), with a caramel backbone, and herbal hops highlights. Flavors are spicy and sweet forward, with a pepper spice overtone throughout. Caramel, pineapple, and melon, with a hint of tart grapefruit, highlighted by herbal hops, a solid resinous character, cut grass, oregano, and subtle tobacco notes. Very interesting blend of fruit and herbs. Smooth, mid-bodied, with a dank, resinous, and spiced aftertaste. The finish is slick, smooth, and dry. Solid, unique beer.

Awesome extra in trade. Thanks! Pours rich golden with creamy small white head. Smell is subtle hops on this 3 month old can. Kind of creamy smelling with a papaya/guava type fruity nose not typical of most IPAs. Taste is much more bitter than the nose would lead on. Kind of a sharp grassy almost pilsner like bitterness to the flavor with a subtle tropical fruit flavor and a bitterness that borders on medicinal/aspirin. Full body, but not syrupy or heavy with appropriate refreshingly prickly carbonation. Very Good IPA overall but the slightly aspirin like bitterness holds it back from being great, even though it does have a unique fruitiness to it that I like.

A: crystal clear; amber; 1 finger white head that receded to a thin film; very nice lacing;

S: subtle; some pear, a little lemon, a bit earthy as well;

T: follows the nose; the earthiness is more in the forefront, with the pear and lemon behind; moderately bitter on the finish;

M: light to medium bodied; moderate carbonation; crisp;

O: calypso hops are interesting; this is a bit different, but enjoyable;
